To be fair, I'm easily excited. But this one seemed worth speaking up for. I alluded to Duane this week that I had something to share with him, but I'm going to let everyone know together at once.
When Antonio Underwood showed up out of nowhere, everyone went scrambling around to see some tape and get a feel for this mystery man. Now I consider him the state's best senior offensive lineman, except for Michael Bennett but he won't be playing on that side anyway. But back when he burst onto the scene, Duane and I came back with the same conclusion; why can't he be 2-3 inches taller so that he could play left tackle?
Well I've come across an in state lineman in this year's junior class, talking 2012, that I believe has that left tackle potential. His name is Terry Davis and he plays for Cincinnati Wyoming. I'm guessing there is some relation to Wyoming's 2011 defensive lineman Tony Davis, who, if you follow the DLR closely, you'll know that Duane was very high on at one point.
Only an inch taller than Underwood at 6-foot-4, but he's a long armed and quick footed 6-foot-4. Would I rather he be 6-6? Yes. Will that make the difference in who will and will not offer, like Ohio State? Possibly. But I've seen enough that if that was my decision to make, the 6-4 frame would be good enough for me.
Now being the state's best left tackle does not automatically warrant a Buckeye offer, but that's just what I believe he is; the state's best left tackle, regardless of class. He actually plays right tackle for Wyoming protecting his left-handed quarterback Kyle Seyfried's (who I also love, by the way) blind side. He's a guy who can mirror his man, bend at the knees and sit back, and really be physical without lunging. I love him in pass pro. I really really like him drive blocking in the run game. I love him being an athlete into the second and third level. I can't wait to see the rest of his junior year tape.
The Buckeyes have been rumored to have offered a pair of Carolinian lineman who could also project to that position. DJ Humphries and Nick Davidson. Neither have reciprocated the interest very much to this point. You better believe that the staff will keep working on these guys, but they both seem to be uphill battles. That could leave the door open for a guy like Davis to win them over. My suggestion would be to get to camp big boy! Especially when athleticism is a strength in your game.
So there is my mystery name for the week. So there is my first ever blog. I hope you liked it and I'll be back soon.
no commentsI ask Buckeye fans all the time why they get so bothered by the national media, Mark May notwithstanding, I just don't see where there is an anti-Buckeye bias. That is, not until yesterday. I don't know what Terrelle Pryor needs to do to quiet the naysayers. He was in the process of throwing for four touchdowns, running for one and even catching a pass for another, but he is still getting picked apart. It seems it is no longer about him fulfilling his massive potential. It is now about perfection. He is still making mistakes. Correct me if I am wrong but I think Brett Favre, a living legend, threw three interceptions last week. There is no no comments
I wanted to go back over the game to look at Mike Adams again. I noticed a few other things which I will note here.
The Manchild has arrived. Buckeye fans have long been waiting on Mike Adams to become "the next Orlando Pace." I took notice of Adams in the first two games and saw a player who was just playing on another level. This game I went back and watched every play he was in the game. Color me impressed.
I did not try to grade him. Only the coaching staff knows exactly what his assignment was on each play. I would love to see that grade and I would love to see the grades for Adams in his first two years. I saw him beaten twice in this game. He was beaten on an inside move in the third quarter by the end but it amounted to nothing as the play was a nice gain to the right. He gave up a sack but I am going to give that one to scheme as the end crashed down inside and a linebacker blitzed from deep. It is a play that I saw him pick up a couple of other times in no comments
The Buckeyes put a new offer on the table. It is a surprise to me but not because I think it is a reach and not because I think it was mistimed. I just thought the staff would wait for awhile to see how things shook out since it is so early.
The offer to Brionte Dunn came three games into the season. Dunn is lighting it up. 830 yards on three games. I think his performance has re-opened the discussion about who is the best back in the state. Every week he adds to his credentials. But I thought the staff would wait. You have to remember that Rushel Shell, a running back from Aliquippa, Pennsylvania has the Buckeyes at the top of his list. Some are touting the talented Shell as the nations top back in 2012. I have not seen the film where he is the best back in the country. From the films I have seen he still needs to show he is the best back in Pennsylvania. Both Greg Garmon from Erie, Pennsylvania and Drew Harris from Downington East are in the discussion for best in no comments
How many discussions did we have about offensive line depth this off-season? The last one, right before the season started, raged for days. I think we are all surprised that the lack of depth would rear its ugly head at safety.
I have been talking about the lack of talent at safety but it is the lack of numbers right now that is hurting us. C.J. Barnetts loss is big. He had a really bad first game against Marshall but the way he played Saturday showed he was the first one to say he needed to be better. What a game he played. Now it looks like he is lost for the season. Jim Tressel just said so in his press conference. I suspect he might be recovered from the injury in time to play again this year but why rush him back just for a couple of games? The odds he is going to be really game ready are not very good. He could have fully recovered but I don't see him ready to play football in time for it to matter. no comments
A very odd game, Buckeye fans. In speaking to a number of people after the game it seems many have the same feelings I do. That while so many are focusing on the four interceptions the defense racked up, there are so many things that we should have done that could have made this a thorough beat down. It was a solid clear victory over an opponent that was just short of being a top ten team. It could have been even more impressive.
I see three plays that resulted in an eighteen point difference in the score. The horrible holding call against Posey that nobody but the one ref saw that took a touchdown off the board, and our continued abysmal special teams coverage that resulted in two kick return touchdowns.
I see six field goal attempts. Getting down in the redzone and only coming out with field goals no comments
I have two major problems going right now. You already know about my love of scotch and real beer. What you may not know is I am one of those sick coffee drinkers. I have an espresso machine that cost more than most guys pay for their first car. I have a newly opened bag of 100% Kona and I am so full of cafeine that I am blinking my eyes. The other problem is I am already so wound up for the Miami game that I am scaring my dogs. My wife left early for work. The chaos of her job is a respite from me.
I was optimistic for the Rose Bowl against Oregon. I am even more optimistic for this game. Frankly, I think Miami is overrated. I keep hearing about the "U." I know the U. Miami, you are not the U. Not yet anyway. The program is on the right track but I think this team is overrated. It no comments
Another great weekend of watching high school football.
First, Glenville. My pecking order for Glenvilles top players is completely upside down. I loved what I saw from Cardale Jones. He looks so much more accurate. I think he is making it very hard for the staff to say no if he gets his grades squared away. He is not getting a lot of help. Dropped balls and some horrid pass protection are hurting him. Shane Wynn scored on a kickoff return but dropped a beautifully thrown ball that would have been one of the plays of the game. Jones gets out of trouble rolls right, throws a strike that would have converted a third and fourteen and could have maybe turned into a score should Wynn have been able to turn it up after the catch but first he needed to catch the ball. He did not have another catch that I am aware of.
Aundray Walker looked trimmer but it did not help. His offer list continues to make me no comments
Overall, I cannot recall a game one where I was left with such a big smile on my face. We have been a slow starting team over the years. Don't quote scores to me. That is not what I am talking about. I am talking about a team looking sharp and crisp. I am talking about coming off the snap with explosion and purpose. That is what I saw last night. Well, that is what I saw on offense and defense. Special teams is another matter.
What is going on with special teams in the last couple of years? Poor tackling, missed blocks, missed assignments in general. Their only touchdown comes on a blocked field goal. Their biggest play comes on someone leaving their lane on the outside and Aaron Gant missing a tackle. They got their hands on an extra point too. In the past we took it for granted Jim no comments
