I got a pleasant surprise this week while looking at film. I had reservations about Josh Perry. He is a nice player. Any other year I could see him as an offer kid. The fact is next year is a special year in the state of Ohio. I think it could be a very important year in the the history of the program and in the Jim Tressel era. I don't know how many scholarships are available. I have heard as few as fifteen. I assume with attrition we will see twenty but we can't count on that. Getting it right means an influx of high level talent that could have a major impact on the program. After seeing the latest film of Perry, the staff definitely got this one right.

As a sophmore I saw a kid that, now looking back, was in a maturity period. He was a little gangly and still working on his coordination. Not anymore. I assume that is what the staff saw when they offered him this summer. This kid is now long and very athletic looking. He is filling out nicely. He could always run but now he is runnign away from people. That is right. He is running away from people at about 6-3 and 225. He looks like he is going to get a good bit bigger.

At the time of his verbal there was a basic, "let me get back to you on that" from the staff about what position he will play. I still think that is the plan. He is playing tight end on offense but that is not the only reason I mention that he is runnign away from people. He looks good as a running back. I don't see a college running back but he is a pretty good high school back. He could be anything from a Leo to a full on hand in the dirt defensive end, to a linebacker.

I want to mention that Jim Tressel has been taking some high character kids with great academics. That is what it was assumed that Perry got his offer based on. High academic kids are usually hard workers. His character plus the drive that brings great grades plus the athleticism I saw in Perry adds up to a high likelihood of a player that contributes. In addition, a player like Perry who could be plugged into so many different positions is a big plus in this class.

The other player who stood out to me this week is North Canton Hoover quarterback Austin Allenby. He is a 2012 player. He is a big kid with a gun for an arm. In the very first play on his ScoutingOhio.com film he throws a frozen rope about 40 yards down the field. He is a very accurate passer as you will see on the film. He is not going to scare anyone with his foot speed but he moves around pretty well back there. He hangs in a delivers with people in his face. About the only downside is his long motion. I see at least a Big Ten quarterback and he could be a Big Four kid.

Here is the Allenby film from ScoutingOhio.com
