With the current depth at Ohio State I don't know if the Buckeyes are going to be in the market for a quarterback in the class of 2012. If they are I think we might be seeing a better crop that we thought would be out there when we first started looking at the class of 2012. I don't think the names you first heard are going to be the ones at the top of the list though.

The first name that broke out in this class was Marty Mauk. He had a head start as his older brother was the most prolific passer in state history and the offense run at Kenton is one that draws alot of interest. I don't know if the glare of the spotlight has done him alot of good. I think he is a better prospect than Ben. He is bigger and has a little better arm but that does not mean his is big or has a great arm. Notice that the schools he has ties natural ties to, Cincinnati and Notre Dame, are the only ones showing interest so far. He is a better athlete than Ben. The one thing they have in common is grit. Both are competitors of the higest order. Good quarterback. Definitely a D-1 kid who will be recruited harder than his brother but not the best in the state.

Northmonts Michael Simpsons stock plummeted after his size, not great to start with when he was listed at 6-2, is looking more like 5-11. He has skills and will be a D-1 player though.

If you come to this blog you will probably think I am going to rank Collin Michael at the top of my list. That is not the case. He has an injury that has knocked him out of the game. It happened early and looks like it could keep him out for the year. I like him alot but not playing has hurt his stock and others have stepped up. After my write-up on Austin Appleby you might guess that he is number one. He is not. I understand that he is out injured himself. I will try and get an update on that.

Without further ado I unveil my early top four quarterbacks:

1 - Tyler Eden, 6-4, 215. University School. Mark Porter sent me this film a few days ago

I am not saying he is as good as Andrew Luck, a quarterback who I rate as the number one player in the next NFL draft. I am saying he reminds me of him. The level of competition is going to be a question but he will have the opportunity to clear that up next summer at camps and combines. Really good arm and very accurate. Very good mechanics and a quicker release than Appleby. Moves around very well. Well enough that if he is not a quarterback he could move to tight end. Mark was told his size is legit. A good summer pushes his stock through the roof. It could push him to being a Big Four target.

2 - Austin Appleby, 6-4, 215, North Canton Hoover. My review on Appleby is on this site. Take a look at it and here is his film from ScoutingOhio:    http://scoutingohio.com/index.php/view-profile.html?task=userProfile&user=3629&name=aappleby15

He is already a nation target with SEC, Big Ten and ACC schools already showing interest.

3 - Collin Michael, 6-5, 200, Lexington. Missing the year at such a young age would knock him down my board except for the fact that he was showing major arm strength at camp this summer.

4 - Will McCollister, 6-4, 200. Rock Hill. It used to be called Ironton Rock Hill. He is not having a great season but who knows what he has around him. He looks great in sophmore film:   http://scoutingohio.com/index.php/view-profile.html?task=userProfile&user=5320&name=wmc2

He caught Jim Tressels eye this summer at camp.

I only did a top four because these are the only ones I have seen film of that I see as big time kids. I have learned that top whatever lists can get you in trouble. It leaves you reaching. Ask Mel Kiper who had to put out a top five senior backs and ended up putting Brandon Saine on the list because the senior back class is so poor.
