In a move that surprised many, Florida defensive back Jeremy Cash committed to the Buckeyes.
Back in January there was so much chatter that he was going to commit right after signing day. After a long wait, Cash started to receive some big time offers. Some speculated that the good ship Cash had sailed. Others were adamant that he was going to be a Buckeye. I had no insight on his recruitment but as a player I had no opininion. This video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6-W5zwwjfw was the one I had seen. I have mentioned before that field level video is the worst for trying to make evaluations. On the plus side, his offer list was very impressive. This video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAJuxJVwceA is where you see what the fuss is about. This is an elite safety prospect, Buckeye fans. On the first two plays on the film you see one of the big pluses with him, great speed. It is sometimes missing with safeties. Good speed is a requirement. Great speed is extra. Look at how quickly he closes ground. Notice how much faster he is moving than everyone else on the field seems to be moving. Also on these first two plays you see great timing and instincts. At the 1:50 mark he makes a play on the ball that impressed as much as any play on the film. He is playing in the middle of the field. He starts back to make sure he is the deepest player on the field, reads the receiver better than the quarterback does because he starts forward to make a play but the pass does not come. He starts back again but the quarterback decides to throw the ball. Cash breaks on the ball like you want to see in a corner and makes an interception. The next few plays after that show what kind of tackler and hitter he is. The next play I want you to notice, is at the 5:19 mark where he runs down a receiver from behind.
This is as impressive a film for a Buckeye defensive back recruit as I have seen in years. Eugene Clifford, C.J. Barnett and Jamie Wood are the only defensive back recruits I have seen who can match this film from Cash. Bill Kurelic called it a huge get and I would agree with him.The only thing that keeps him from playing in the defensive backfield as a freshman is that he will be in the lineup as a linebacker at the Star. Look at the body on this kid. Long and lean with the wingspan of a condor. He is going to get bigger. He could get a good deal bigger. He is as good at the line of scrimmage as he is playing the pass. He is an even better fit at the Star as he is as a safety.
