Multiple reports have Jermale Hines to strong safety. Kurt Coleman to free safety. Anderson Russell was not running with the ones at practice all day. Maybe I will talk about safeties more later but that is not the most pressing thing on my mind right now.
I know we can't leave Russell back there at free safety. No problem with making a move. In doing it this way I think we may be weakening another position. One that is going to be key for us. USC is a pass first open field team. They are looking to create mismatches. Who is going to play the Star? I don't know about the timing of this but it speaks volumes about the depth chart at safety. With Moeller we had a backup that would have allowed us the luxury of no dropoff in talent or production with this move. We do not have that option right now.
We have no scholarship player that I am aware of who has been practicing at the Star. We are in 4-2-5 so much it is basically a co-base defense. I visualize it more as a 4-2-5. My handwritten depth chart is a 4-2-5 formation. The question now is, do we look at playing with three linebackers or do we bring another corner on the field. I say corner because we obviously don't have faith in any of the healthy safeties with the exception of Coleman. That means a corner on the field if we want to stay with more cover people. We tend to have larger corners here at Ohio State. Howard is a nice sized corner. Barnett is a big corner. A safety sized corner. I don't know if this is time for a freshman debut. Amos and Torrence are battling for the one corner spot. Put both on the field. They are decent sized kids. USC is going to wear out that underneath stuff. I doubt anyone is going to forget the sight of the USC fullback running away from Marcus Freeman last year. We need to have a player more comfortable in coverage and who has better speed out there for this game.
This move is proof of one thing. We do not have another strong safety on the roster who is game ready right now.
