Toledo Game Review

It has been my contention all along that Pryor throws the ball better than anyone is giving him credit for. The thing that stands out to me is the criticism of his motion. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with the pass. His motion is so much better than when he was in high school. The little hitch that he only shows sometimes is inconsequential. He has a great arm. He is throwing with accuracy. The first touchdown to Sanzenbacher was picture perfect. The second one was sublime with the accuracy. The biggest problem right now is the tendency to try to make a play when there is not a play to make. That tendency was crucial in the Penn State game. Sometimes a sack is the best play available. He had three bad decisions all day on his own. Under pressure he made several more because of his determination to make a play. I think we should give him the option of running when the pocket breaks down. Tell him to make the decision which is the better play, a low percentage pass or running? He is fully committed to throwing the ball. I don't see a quarterback who has more faith in his feet than his arm. Give him the option to make the decision to take off. I think that makes him all the more dangerous. Some throws I would like to take back but a great bounce back game for the Franchise.

We are still not a great running team. Better than last week. I think we threw some different things in there. For one thing I noticed us going right more. Shugarts showed he has not been getting enough reps. There were a couple of plays where if he gets his seal block that we could have had some big runs.

I think backs could have something to do with the run game too. I see a brutally efficient back in Herron but he is not a lead back. I see more out of Saine. His quick feet are back. He is showing explosion again. He is never going to be a shifty guy but he is fast and strong. Give him a hole and he could be dangerous. More reps for him. Speaking of more reps, who was the most impressive back today? Jordan Hall was quick to the hole and running stronger than I thought he could. He is not running the stuff I expected him to run. He is running the basic Buckeye RB package. More of him too. The thing about a smaller quicker back between the tackles is the speed and elusiveness once he breaks the line of scrimmage. Get him in the middle of the field 3 yards from the line of scrimmage and the odds of getting the kick team on the field for the next play go up dramatically. He is taking up in there tough. Very impressed.

Last year I said Duron Carter had the best body of any receiver I saw in the class. He has such great hands and with that long lean body he is going to get alot bigger and still be this fast. Gotta be excited about his future. Sanzenbacher is to the Franchise what Gonzalez was to Smith. He is his go to guy. The second touchdown pass was mostly one handed. This is a kid who had a case of the dropsies early in his career.Solid game by Raymond Small. He helped this football team today in the passing game and especially in the reutrn game. Good decisions every time.

The Stoneburner move is looking like a lose-lose proposition. He is not getting on the field as a tight end and when he is out there he is not seeing the ball.

Is it just me or does Lamaar Thomas look like he is not happy out there?

We need to see more of Bauserman. He has not impressed me yet. I think he needs more game reps. I don't want to need him the way he is playing right now.

Overall a better offensive game plan. I saw different things on offense. I was disappointed down on the goal line when we ran the same play that we keep getting stuffed on, and got stuffed again. We get the ball back late in the half, less than a minute to go and run a quarterback draw. That completely baffled me. Other than that I liked what we did.

Someone send a tape of this game to Colin Cowherd. You don't have to bother with the entire game. Just send the defensive plays. Wasn't Toledo averaging like 45 points a game? Not anymore.

I think the co-defensive coordinator situation showed today what it is capable of. Fickell brings the aggression, Heacock tempers it, hones it. We are plenty aggressive but don't expose ourselves. The key to it is the fact that we bring it with the defensive line. Notice how effective our blitz is? That is because the defensive line is already giving them fits. We can't keep Cam Heyward at this rate. The NFL is going to more 3-4. About a third of the teams play the 3-4 scheme. The 5-technique DE, lined up over the outside shoulder of the right tackle, is hugely important. He is playing so well that we lined him up on the weakside. That is where he had the most impact in the game. You are looking at your best pass rusher, your speed rusher most of the time, out there on the weak side. Speaks volumes for his level of play right now. He was a beast today, again.

As I expected Doug Worthington is thriving as a DE in the odd man front. Yes, that is what we are seeing. It is the base defense for us right now. That is why we are seeing less of Wilson, who had a good game today, and Rob Rose. We are playing with three inside players on the field, instead of two tackles and two ends. Denlinger looks like himself. The first time in two years. I love that. Worthington and Denlinger, a couple of class acts, having good senior years. The one kid I want to talk about is Simon. I questioned whether he was going to get big enough to be an impact player. He is not getting pushed around out there and is playing smart football. I don't remember if it was Heyward or Worthington who got the hit on the quarterback early in the game. That would not have happened if not for a great play by Simon. He stood his guy up and stepped outside, forcing the quarterback into the pocket where Heyward or Worthington was waiting on him.

Based on what you have seen so far, who is making more an impact, Thad Gibson or Nathan Williams?

Love what we are seeing out of Rolle. He was always a run and hit kid. Because of his size everyone projected him outside. Every once in awhile the stars align right and you get a Sam Mills or Zack Thomas. His read-react-run is special. I have always been a big fan of Ross Homan. He is playing so well. I don't know about Spitler. He is not making plays out there. He is not making mistakes either. I have not seen him flash. I did see Sabino flash. He gets my attention when he is out there.

Do you believe me now that Chekwa is the best one on one defender on the roster?

Torrence is showing his lack of reps. Great athlete that seems a little lost out there.

Loved seeing Johnson on the field. Get as many reps as possible youngster. We need you.

Lamaar Thomas

I worry about Thomas. I wonder if he might be a transfer possibility after this season. I imagine both he and Stoneburner see their talents being wasted away.

I think Thomas will transfer as well. I just don't see him getting on the field.

Cool it with the transfer rumors. LT's just a soph and Stoney is just a frosh. Both are getting pt. Both will see more next year with Ballard and Small leaving.

I liked what I saw out of Mike Adams today. What do you think Duane? Shugarts didn't look very good to me today, the penalties, and I thought his first step was a tad slow. Is this rust or reality?

The Thad Gibson/Nate Williams team reminds me as a developing version of the old Peter Boulware/Reinard Wilson tag team at Florida State. They feed off each other. As an offense you can't leave two backs in to block each side on pass protection.

Duane - good writeup. This week is tremendous for TP to watch film. There were so many good plays, and a fair number of learning opportunities. You are right - he is trying to make plays, but against a better D much of what he tried would be a liability.

Even with TP's good game, the QB's surprise me. JB brings even less intensity into the huddle than TP and I can't figure out why. If they were going full bore in practice, you would expect them to come out breathing fire come game time - especially JB. But they get into the huddle and run the plays like it's pregame warmups. I don't remember this lack of intensity out of the position.

I love what Rolle brings, but there was a play where he jumped on the WRs back and got carried for four more yards. That is the first negative I've seen from him. I can't wait to see him bloiwng up plays against running QBs like McGee next week and Tate down the line. Too little of Sabino again today - I can't figure that out.

We need to see more Jordan Hall. He looks like he might have some wiggle the other backs don't quite have. Boom has been a disappointment to me so far because of what we saw last year and in the Spring game. He seemed to have more burst, whereas today he seemed to be trying to go to fast - resulting in too many shoestring tackles. I still like him, but I'm starting to waver on whether he is the #1 back (right now) that I thought he was.

Duane,
I think you give TP too much credit as a passer. I don't give a damn about his throwing motion either. Hell, he can bend over and long-snap the passes for all I care. The things that matter are:
1) are the passes accurate,
2) do the passes spiral and
3) do the passes have enough on them to keep DBs from reacting while in flight?

When he's clean (no pressure), set in the pocket and throwing in rhythm (= WR clean release) he looks good, meeting all 3 of those criteria. (Most D-1 QBs do under those circumstances.) However, take any of those conditions away and TP is a very, very average QB (both passing and decision-making). His footwork is BAD, which causes a lot of innaccurate, ugly passes, picks, etc.

I do agree with you on his running. I think the passing system needs to be simplified for him. If his 1st or 1-2 reads aren't open, use your feet to make a positive play. If you get flushed, just tuck it and go.

Don't wait on a called QB run to show your legs as a weapon. Then as TP fixes the issues above, you can extend it to make 3 reads, then 4, etc. before you tuck and run.

Other than that, great writeup. However, we shouldn't get too carried away (especially on offense) since it was only Toledo.

I wish we could have seen Bauserman more but clearly Pryor needs the reps. Still making too many bonehead decisions and missing reads but, there was progress. I would like to see him step up into the pocket when there is outside pressure and find the open man. He has the happy feet. I might too if our DL had been after me in practice. Happy feet hell, I'd just lay down and cry.

Simon being able to get these minutes as a true freshman with the other DL talent we have says STUD. Nice to see Goebel get some minutes.

The play calling was fairly decent other than the two things Duane pointed out. I'm not a big fan of Small because of the off field issues but he is playing well and much respect to Cordle for playing injured and very well against USC.

The procedure penalties were maddening but I thought a couple times that Shugarts was just moving faster than all the other OL (besides the C) after the ball was snapped and drew a penalty. Lest see, what else can I complain about? Oh yeah, we got a little lazy with the tackling a few times. Got to wrap up and drive through. I also noticed Rolle getting carried for 4 yards.

I think JT tends to tighten it up, cut down on the possibilities of mistakes, against better opponents. So much at the core of Tresselball is he who makes the lest mistakes wins. Against better opponents he believes those mistakes will cost him more so he buttons it up another level.
Buster's comment

+1 on Buster's point that TP may be too frazzled to go through progressions because he's always getting flushed in practice against the DL.

The need to move is a symptom of the OL not holding a pocket, and the DL getting pressure, so the QB must begin to use escapability too often, but TP does not actually take off running.

Not sure about the term "happy feet." Usually that implies the QB takes off running too fast. Others complain that TP does not take off enough.

Inexperience is really hurting him. His timing in particular is off. He can't find a rhythm. He has not been able to settle in with his line mates. Comes here, gets hurt. Starts to come back, gets hurt again. Lots of missed reps. I liked his aggression and he is so much more athletic than any right tackle in recent memory. I like that he is making mistakes on his toes rather than his heels.

In fairness to Rolle, that was a tight end.

That is the downside. He is going to give up size. So far it has not been a problem. He is recognizing and attacking before linemen can engage him. He is as fast as a safety. There is an engagement zone. When we diagram plays we show the lineman making contact at a perfect point. Every step beyond that point makes that block less and less likely to be effective. He is beyond the "engagement zone", before they can get there. As long as he keeps doing that I can handle him having a hard time trying to corral a tight end down the field. He is not going to find himself one on one with a tight end much.

I was in the stands yesterday, so I was able to zone in on individual players more than the TV camera, which focuses on the ball. Pryor just doesn't look right. Say what you want about his throwing motion, but in the pocket, he looks like he's walking on ice or gingerly stepping through an uncertain path. When he runs with the ball, he doesn't seem to 'finish' the run...he just looks odd going down. It doesn't help that he's getting hit too much in the pocket (you think Big Ten defenders aren't licking their chops?)

For all the talk I've heard about Thomas, he looks slow on the field in what snaps he is on the field for. Compared to Posey/Sanz/Carter/Small, Thomas moves in slow motion on the football field.

Duane, can you comment on the 1st and goal that produced zero points in the 2nd quarter? O-line's fault? Offensive playcalling's fault? Mishaps such as this will cost the Bucks a Big Ten game (already cost us the USC game).

The to fan the transfer flames, but I wouldn't be shocked if Taurian Washington started looking around, rather than Lamaar Thomas. From 3rd on the depth to 6th? Posey, Carter, and Sanz don't look to be giving up their slots anytime soon either.

Agree Pryor needs the reps. Not in love with his throwing motion, but whatever. Think his BIGGEST problem is he DOESNT have confidence throwing the ball. Looked better, but he AIMS the ball too much. Needs to just step into it and let it throw. DONT AIM and DONT THROW OFF BACK FOOT!

A couple questions Duane.

First the same one as H-Back is asking about the stalled drive at the goal line where Boom just ran up the back of Adams on first and second down. First of all Adams got absolutely no push at all. But then could Boom have any VISION at all. I see Jordan Hall rising up the food chain soon with that VISION he has. He is impressive. I think Boom is #3 out of those 3 IMO.

Next, I didn't see Keith Wells or Conner Smith on the field, and I have been asking if those two are in the DOGHOUSE!

You have been discussing Wells' attitude all summer long and now he has not gotten any PT. We played 12 down lineman against Toledo including Ingham, and no Wells. What is up with that. Why is he NOT on the travel team?

Conner Smith was NOT part of the 65 man squad either, and we did play 10 offensive lineman. We shifted around to makeup for Shugarts false starts and Boren's injuries, and even got Scott Sika in there, but no Conner Smith. Are we telling him not to come back?
