Recruiting - Ohio State on the cutting edge
Written by Duane Long

The Buckeye staff is getting lambasted for being too conservative with play calling. The same cannot be said for recruiting. In fact, I would go so far as to say the staff is cutting edge with the way they go about recruiting. Look at the situation with the class of 2011. How many offers are out there already? 10 or so? It is especially effective with instate recruits. Contact is severely limited for underclassmen. Instate schools have such an advantage that I would not be surprised if the NCAA eventually steps in. Juniors, and even sophmores, can get to games instate much easier than they can out of state schools. It is easier for a staff to "bump" into instate underclassmen when they stop by a school to meet with coaches. The Florida schools, the Texas schools, the California schools and Ohio State are left with a lopsided advtantage. Right now it is not against the rules and the Buckeyes are taking great advantage of it.

The juniors offered are a well documented lot. There are some others I want fans to be aware of.

Ron Tanner is an athlete from Eastmoor Academy. He reminds me of Isaiah Pead. I am not saying he is as good as Pead but he is close to being that good. He could be a receiver, or a safety or maybe a corner. He plays quarterback in high school. I was very happy to see the Buckeyes bring him in for the USC game. JT loves the versatile players. Tanner is right at the top of the list instate. He has offers from Michigan, West Virginia and Pitt right now.

I love Chris Rock. Whether he is a strong side end or a tackle, he is a big athletic kid with a great motor. I am surprised that he does not have an offer yet. Strong side end is a major need.

Cole Stoudt is a quarterback from Dublin Scioto.I would love to see an offer to Stoudt. Grabbing both he and Miller in the same class would be one of the great coups in the Tressel era. Talk about upgrading the quarterback position. If I am making the decision, I ask my staff about Miller. Do we have him? Give me your gut on this one. If you are not absolutely confident that we are going to get him, tell me now. I know kids can change their minds. I know you are not a mind reader. I know there are no guarantees. Just tell me what you think. If we are not completely confident that we are going to get him I would offer Stoudt. I am that impressed with him. He reminds me of Justin Zwick. Tall kid with a live arm and very athletic for his size. It was all in Zwicks head. He had all the tools to be a great one. He made bad decisions because he was so physically gifted. He just knew he could get it on there. That is why he threw interceptions. The kid could throw the ball. Stoudt has the same tools. Getting both these quarterbacks would be what I would try to pull off. I know. It would be like trying to get both Halle Berry and Bar Refaeli to not care that I am dating the other, but I have to try. Upgrade the quarterback position at every opportunity. The consensus is we are going to get Miller. That is not as rock solid as it once was but despite all the fallout after the USC game, I have yet to hear anyone credible says that Miller is not still ours to lose. I would still get in on Stoudt. I see a win-win. If Miller is turned off by the offense we have a really nice fallback plan. If we get both it is nothing but a coup.

There is another tight end other than Ben Koyack that fans need to be aware of. Nick O'Leary from West Palm Beach Dwyer has been offered by Florida, Miami and Tennessee amongst others. We have a built in advantage. He is Jack Nicklaus grandson.

Staff has made another QB offer to OOS prospect from South Carolina. They are also getting positive vibes from Bridewater from Miami.

I'd stick with the plan - High profiles or bust and continue to load up on the other positions of need. The young man they have signed this year is an insurance.

duane--watched the Tanner kid against St Charles and he is almost a one man show for Eastmoor. Definite leader on both sides of the ball and even though he was getting his world rocked he kept his head and played until the end. I see more DB than offensive kid. I think he could be a good safety with a little more weight.

Duane, Do you remember me telling you about my Godson Colton Caldwell the backup QB at Coffman?
Well Crabtree finally moved him over to HB/TE this year (his Senior year), and he has became Cole's favorite receiver. He has caught five catches a game as a TE for about 90 yards per game (which is a career for a TE at O STATE). Too bad Crabtree didnt move him over there last year. In the game in the Shoe, he caught a TD, but was called back with a holding call. Scored again second game, called back again. Third game scored twice. Fourth game no scores, but had a 60 yarder, carrying 2 Dbs with him.
They are teaching him how to block better as this is his first year as a TE.

We are still waiting for Crabtree to get us a tape as MSU, Iowa, Purdue, Indiana, Wisc., Colorado, and Cincy are interested to name a few.
Mark Porter asked me to get him a tape to help us too.
He is in the class of 2010, and I know it is too late for TOSU for a TE.
In his third game, thery line him up in his 45 Colt formation (wildcat) and I heard he ran for 40 yards or so.
He is 6-4 235lbs. 4-7 40 left handed actually looks alittle like Tebow.

The situation at QB has improved dramatically. As I stated prior, I don't think even a Vince Young senior year vaults Terrelle into the NFL draft. That means we should have our QB for two more seasons. I was dissapointed we lost out on Tajh Boyd, but have been thrilled by the video I have seen on Taylor Graham. What an important pickup that has been. OSU has gone through too many times where we have not had two solid QBs on the roster. Both have a chance to be special.

I hope that Braxton Miller's heart is still with the Bucks. I think it only makes sense to look around. For recruiting purposes, I was hoping he would verbal early. QBs who verbal early seem to spearhead a strong recruiting class. If Miller joins, OSU would have more talent at the QB position then at any time in the Tressel era.

It is still really early in recruiting, but I am still hoping for a snowball effect in terms of 2011 verbals. The 2008, 2009, and the 2010 class are tremendous recruiting classes. I think the 2011 class has the impact players to play for a couple of NCs.

With questions about JT Moore and Darryl Baldwin, Kenny Hayes and Steve Miller are important recruits in my mind. Even better if Jamel Turner ends up at OSU. Hopefully this is the class we zero in on stud DTs. For this reason, Chris Rock is one of the most important recruits in this class.

I really like where we sit with our LBers. We should only need 1, but we could take two if they are outstanding prospects. As long as we land Jordan Hicks, I don't think we need any LBers. That is reassuring as I am nervous about Depriest.

The staff has a chance to really solidify the safety position with Hagan, Anderson, Bryant, and Joyner. If we land all three players we can be picky in 2011. Even 2 of 3 would do wonders for our depth. I love OSU's situation at CB with Corey Brown, Dominic Clarke, Travis Howard, and CJ Barnett waiting in the wings. If we land Josh Shaw, I think we would be fine taking only 1 and maybe 2 if outstanding.

High profile or bust is a recipe for disaster. We are on the outside looking in with both the kids you are talking about. Trust me on this. Bridgewater is not sure he wants to be a quarterback in college. I heard that before I saw him. He is a quarterback. He is a bigger stronger and more athletic version of Braxton Miller. I agree with my old friend Bill Greene who got lambasted for saying Bridgewater is better than Miller. He is. That this kid is thinking he stands a better chance at the Show by moving to receiver is going to impact his recruitment.

Cutting Edge???
written by SoCal Rick, October 01, 2009
Strong recruits but I don't see what's cutting edge about this recruiting strategy?

Is it cutting edge to go after in state recruits when you have a deep local talent pool as it was pointed out schools in California, Florida, and Texas also do? This is something new?

I enjoyed the update on the recruits but based on the title and the first three sentences I thought I was going to read about some new online recruiting technique - maybe Tressel talking to recruits over a webcam or something.
