Next National championship
Written by Duane Long

I want to get out in front on this. I want to be the first to say it. The 2010 national champions will be the Ohio State Buckeyes. You know I am no cheerleader. I do not own a pair of scarlet and gar colored glasses. This blog is evidence of that. I am a realist. I am pragmatic. I am not going to make a statement like that unless I intend to back it up.

Change is occurring. Not as fast as some of us would like, but it is happening. I was so frustrated by the defense since Jim Heacock took over that I wanted to see a housecleaning. Get new coordinators on both sides of the ball. That was after the USC game where we once again played safe, keep them in front us, don't give up the big play, and we got embarrassed again. We have not played that way since. Some fans were angry that we were so aggressive in the Texas game that it cost us the game. That is change.

Never has JT come under more fire than the firestorm that hit Columbus after another poor performance on offense against USC. Since then we are seeing more involvement from Darrell Hazel. The offense is different. I think we are not done seeing it evolve. It is not like this can happen overnight. You put in this while you dump that.It is a process.

It has always been my contention that JT is too much of a competitor to tolerate losing like this. I absolutely believe he is as bothered by 0-6 as we are. But change is hard. Especially for a man who has been so successful doing it the way he has been doing it all these years. Think about it this way. Florida has won the national championship two out of the last three years. If Urban Meyer decided to go to the wishbone we would all say, is he nuts? JT won 4 of his 5 national championships years ago. The national championship here may have been the worst thing to happen to him as it reinforced his belief in his way of doing things. It has taken time for him to come around to this. I think USC was the final straw.

On the field the horses are there. We just need to use them better.

I could not be more baffled by the flack Pryor is taking. I am looking at a young quarterback coming along. I was especially bothered this past weekend when he came under attack. I saw his best game of the year. He threw 3 touchdown passes and should have had 4. He did whatever he wanted out there. I saw 2 bad plays out of him. One a bad throw and the other a bad decision, the interception late in the game. I am excited about where he can be next year. Vince Young was not a good quarterback as a sophmore. Neither was Troy Smith. He was not even a starter. Carson Palmer was not a starter until his senior year. Won a Heisman. Successful sophmore quarterbacks are an exception, not the rule. This kid can take us where we want to go.

We will be better at running back. The backs we have will have another year to mature. Rod Smith and Corey Brown are coming in and may take reps from all of them. Running backs come in all the time as freshman and start. Why more don't is more about blitz pick-ups, blocking in general and receiving. I think Posey, Carter and Sanzenbacher will go down as one of the most formidable receiver corps ever. Posey and Carter are really now just getting their feet wet.

We will be a better offensive line.We have been talking about offensive coordinator so much that we are forgetting the impact of a new offensive line coach. Even without a change in the offense, better play up front will make this a better team. I see signs of it right now. Maybe sharing the OC duties with Hazel is helping Bollman be a better offensive line coach. I know we are moving people all of a sudden. Yes, we are more talented. That still goes back on Bollman. If he would have taken more kids over the years we would have been better earlier. Numbers matter in recruiting. That is why bigger classes end up at the top of the recruiting rankings. No position is more numbers sensitive than offensive line. Maybe he is a good offensive line coach. We never got to see that because of recruiting decisions that go back on him. We are young and we will be better.

We lose one linebacker. We lose both safeties and we lose some DLs. If we lose Heyward I may want to come back and say we have a great shot at winning it. He is that important to the defense. Everywhere else on defense we have talent that can step up. I am worried about safety right now. I will not be as worried about it next year. Something I did not point out yesterday about the safety recruits were the rankings. All are at least 4 star players. All are ranked in the top 10 at their positions, with 3 of the 5 ranked in the top 3. All play at a high level of competition in high school. They will be more ready to step in immediately. That we are going to get at least 2 of them, and I think at least 3, says we will have some elite kids to throw into the mix.

The bow to tie all this together is Miami, Penn State and Michigan at home.

The Ohio State Buckeyes - 2010-2011 national champions.

That's a pretty bold statement Duane. Not one I can agree with right now, especially not this early, but I'm definitely liking the sound of it. I think it's going to depend on how the crazy works out--early NFL entries, transfers, injuries, grades, etc.

I thought Peterson (TEs) was the one sharing duties with Bollman on OL duties, not Hazell (WRs). Either way, if Hazell is taking over (or at least getting more involved with) play calling duties, and Peterson has tackles now in addition to his TE duties, I have to think the writing is on the wall for Bollman. He's solely responsible only for C/Gs now... I have to think he's transitioning out.

I agree that OSU will be good next year, as long as Heyward comes back. I actually might like to see him bulk up a little more and move inside permanently. You are going to laugh at this, but once again our National Championship hopes will come down to an early season game again. Miami is going to be the best team we will play next year. The personnel has been getting better over the last few years. This year they finally have offensive and defensive coordinators that REALLY know what they're doing. Patrick Nix (their OC the last few years) couldn't run an offense any better than a poor high school coach. This team is young, quick, and finally getting some coaching. I hope Tress has a copy of the game against Va. Tech. It is going to take a VERY strong defensive effort to beat Miami.

While I agree completely with your analysis, doesn't history (at least over the past several years) tell us that teams win it all one year BEFORE they are supposed to have all the pieces in place. Seems to me that the hunger is there early and perhaps some complacency when it's "supposed" to happen. We at OSU have examples on both sides....we were a year away in 2002 (and 196smilies/cool.gif, and we were supposed to be great last year with the seniors coming back. Perhaps it's the team version of "if it's going to bite, it'll bite as a pup"

Duane I am not ready to be as bold as you in my forecast but at the same time I am close enough that I will not argue with your prediction. I have said since the Spring Game that this would be a good year but next year would be THE year. (2011 will be a great year too if Pryor stays four.) The only thing that I think you may be missing is in your critique of the secondary. Yes, you are right on with your analysis of our recruiting secondary for this year. However, what I think you are forgetting are some really good freshman that we have red-shirting. Woods, Barnett, Clarke and Corey Brown. Woods, Barnett and Brown I believe were 4 Star recruits and ranked in the top dozen at their respective positions. Clarke was a 3 Star but has a lot of ability.

Kurt Coleman will be a much bigger loss than we could ever think...

On the d-line:

GONE:

Worthington
Rose
Denlinger
Wilson

COULD be gone:

Gibson
Heyward
Larrimore

Back fo sho:

Williams
Simon
Goebbell
Thomas

Dudes that had not played:

Wells
Bellamy
Fellows

I need to see Larrimore come back plus 1 of Cam/Thad and I will get my hopes up for next season...

pretty bold statement duane. i agree wtih many of your statements, but i'm thinking that next year's DL will be too weak (if heyward leaves) to contend with the likes of alabama and lsu.

and that's killin me, because, as i've discussed with you, i think DT and strong-side DE are the the most important positions to winning a national championship. simply put, you need star-studded depth at those positions to win the big games, and the buckeyes won't have enough depth at those two positions.

Next year, you have to watch those traps road games. It will be hard enough to get by Illinois and Wisconsin on the road. But to squeeze IOWA in between PSU and Michigan on the road in November is a BIG TRAP GAME, and we say what it did to PSU last year!

Larrimore is coming back, let's not over do things.

I started this whole "Heyward is very likely to leave" craze and I feel less and less confident about that now. I don't want to downplay the importance of the depth at SDE this year though. A lot of us take for granted how fresh we can keep Heyward because we are literally 3-4 deep right now at his position. That third/fourth guy is huge if we want to keep playing some of the 3-4 base set so Thad/Nate can roam. With Rose/Wilson/Worthington leaving, I'm thinking/hoping that Fellows can be the second guy. Who after that? JT Moore?

Good point about JT's 2002 NC possibly reinforcing his philosophy and six butt whippins later he's figuring it out. USC last year was when the light truly went on, and he knew they needed to change direction. He's been right there ever since, and this year's USC game seems to have really given this team the confidence to go out and take care of business. This is a TEAM, which we haven't been seeing in Columbus for several seasons.

He also had a bunch of special players in '02. Krenzel, Gamble, Mangold, Clarrett, Hartsock, Grant, Petersen, Anderson, Scott, Wilhelm, Doss, Smith, et al.

Doesn't it just seem like Gibson, Heyward, Larimore, Williams, Homan, Torrence, Sanz, Carter, Posey, Pryor, Herron, Saine, Brewster, Adams, Boren, Browning, Shugarts, et al, can be the same kind of heart and soul?

This is so much more fun than the last three seasons!

Duane is closer than many think. We go back to USC and change a few calls and this kinda talk would be happening now. With the right attitude, leadership, and luck next years squad could be one for the ages.
Biggest obstacle they might face is the heavy burden of expectations. 2008 squad crumbled under that and played tight.

This years team needs to win there Bowl game and set the stage.

Exciting to think about. I still think that I would either like to see Darrell Hazell made the official OC and another mind brought in for WR. Completely valid that the change cannot happen overnight.

I am most excited about the play on the line. The OL is finally mauling some DL. It has been a long time since we have seen that kind of production. Numbers are still a problem, but the fortunate thing has been the guys we are recruiting a very good. Shugarts and Adams are coming along with the steady and stable Brewster. Due to injury Hall is going to see time. I don't think the RS for Longo, Linsley, and Mewhort have anything to do with talent. This is a great decision. We just need to keep recruiting well at the position. A Seantrel Henderson or Matt James to go along with Norwell would be outstanding.

If there is one position I am concerned about for the future it is DT. I just do not see as much consistency in recruiting at the position. We are witnessing what having two dominating DTs can do for a defense. It is imperative that if OSU is going to make a series of runs for the NC that OSU grab a few more DTs.
