Just talkin' football

If there has ever been a college football season that made the early polls more of a joke than this year, I don't remember it. Mississippi was as high as #4? Did you see Mississippi last night? That is a team that is going to have a hard time winning enough games to be bowl eligible. I don't understand how they got there. I assume that the Mississippi quarterback, Jevan Snead, and DE Greg Hardy were the basis of the ranking. Both are projected first round draft choices. Snead is the quarterback Steve Spurrier made first team all-SEC over Tebow. Last night he was simply awful. I think he hurt his draft stock more with his comment about being happy that now the pressure was off. Huh? You want to play in the NFL but you are relieved that the pressure is off??? I can see him surely falling out of the first day just on that comment.

Speaking of the draft, Hardy had a good game even though he was not 100%. The best player on the field was S. Carolina DE/OLB Eric Norwood. He is special. For those of us that follow the pro game, that is a name to remember.

It seems there is some buzz about Taylor Mays with the Browns. If the Browns have a chance at Eric Berry and pass to take Mays then we will see a new staff and GM again in Cleveland in a few years. Berry is Ed Reed. Mays is Sean Taylor without the baggage. What that means is Berry is a possible future Hall of Famer. Mays is going to carry the mystique that comes from a player that big at safety, who brings you the occasional big hit.

NFL team I am rooting for this year, other than the Steelers of course. The San Francisco 49'ers. Love Singletary, and I have had enough of the prima donas. Michael "Kanye" Crabtree ended up at Texas Tech due to character questions. He fell down NFL draft boards for that reason, as much as for the foot injury. Now he is holding out because he and his agent have come up with this formula that makes him worth top 5 money. He has decided that he will just re-enter the draft next year and get drafted higher. What? Let me get this straight. You are going to not play football for a full year, coming off an injury mind you, confirm your prima dona credentials, and get drafted HIGHER??? Like Kanye, Crabtree is a legend in his own mind.

Back to the college game. Florida is #1. Who wants to take a stab at #2? I doubt there is any consensus. Texas will likely do for now. After that it is a complete crapshoot. Alabama, Penn State and California are next. Is anybody really impressed with any of them? Boise State is the 8th best team in the country? Not a chance. Put them in a big conference and they will never win more than 8 games. I am more impressed with the next few teams, Miami, USC, Ohio State and Cincinnati. USC came into Columbus and won a game over a better Buckeye team than anyone wants to give them credit for being. In a week where Colin Cowherd said the Buckeye defense was overrated, that defense shut out a Toledo team that had scored 90 points in two games. It is a defense that held USC to 11 points. No, I am not counting the first touchdown against the defense. The offense game the ball to USC on the 2 yard line, and I have yet to speak to anyone that has seen the picture of the touchdown that says the USC back got over the goal line. Miami is fast again and Jacory Harris is the real deal. USC was coming off a huge win at Ohio State and had injuries to two key players. Cincinnati is putting together a resume that gives them a strong argument for being called, "the Beast of the East." They won the Big East last year and have slapped their first 3 opponents up and down the field. Looking at their schedule they are odds-on to go 12-0. The biggest problem for the Bearcats is trying to hold on to head coach Brian Kelly.

One last thing. There was an interesting blog post by a fellow Bloguin football blogger about the Ohio State-Oklahoma double standard. Go over and take a look.

I asked Phil Steele on rivals today about if UC should get a National Title nod over a one loss UF, Texas, or USC. He says it was the best question of the week and it all matters on how Oregon State does.

UC will be favored in the rest of their games going into Pitt for the last game of the season. I dont see anyone in the Big East stopping UC's offense.

Cincy better enjoy the ride because bigger and better programs will be calling Kelly by the end of the season. Look no further than Notre Dame if they keep struggling. They were looking at 1-2 until MSU made one bad throw. They still have to play USC, BC, Navy, and Stanford, and suddenly that Washington game might not be such a gimme. If ND drops 4-5 games Weis could be shown the door.

If not ND, there's also Virginia, Texas A&M, Pittsburgh, and Arizona. Maybe even a team like Wisconsin if they struggle again this year in the conference and Alvarez decides not to let the program slip any further.

I think it will take a Notre Dame or Wisconsin type team to pull him out. He has it too easy in the Big East. Maybe Zona or A&M if they throw enough $$ at him.

They just now sold out the Fresno game. Sad UC just sad.

A&M definitely has the budget to pay him top dollar. Maybe not Arizona though.

Your first question of how Ole Miss was #4?
The good old SEC favorites are soo over rated!
I still would love to have a 1 thru 12 vs our 1 thru 11 inter conference mandatory ooc play every tyear like we do in BB.
I am tired of how the Nation talks uyp their BS.
Sure they have a few teams at the Top like we do, but they also have a bunch at the bottom like we do too.

They always want to stuff SIX SEC teams in the TOP Twelve at the Beginning of the Season, as if we all are playing a different kind of game.

I would love for Cincinnati to join the Big ten. I think it is time, and they are worthy. The BB program has been ready for ever.

And I am also really excited about this upcoming matchup with TP and Jacory and the "U" coming in here next year.

Listened to a podcast (Dameshek on ESPN) with a guy from AccuScore yesterday about how the BCS will play out. He claims that an undefeated UC would be shut out of the national championship in favor of one-loss teams from the other BCS conferences.

Has there been a year where the analysts were this bad. Come on ESPN college football except Robert Smith has turned into the biggest joke in the world, Pat Forde listing Miami #1, Todd McShay's heisman list, Mark May and Lou Holtz, Tom Luginbil and his joke crew, and then you got cfn who rank Notre Dame #12 and Ohio State 19th or something.

Wow, can't believe you think Mays is as good as Taylor without the baggage. He isn't even close. Taylor was the total package. Mays is only a run defender who can't play the ball for sh*t.

Even though they drop an easy one every year, I have no doubt in my mind that USC lost to U-Dub because of the pounding they took in Columbus. We know about the players who were officially dinged up, but I would imagine every starter except Corp was playing bruised. It's going to be a long season looking back on that game and how hard they had to work to give it away - it wasn't easy. The Buckeyes will be right in the mix at the end of the season.

Taylor was overrated. The 'Skins came back the next year and took LaRon Landry because they were so disappointed in Taylor.

This year ANYONE can win it. The Bucks just need to keep shutting teams out and we'll be in the big dance with a decent shot at it.
