JTs Presser
Written by Duane Long

A lot is being made about Jim Tressels press conference yesterday. If you have not seen it or heard it I think you may want to. It is not the usual Senatorial say nothing that we are used to from JTs pressers.

I don't know about the other sites but Bucknuts has one of the largest threads I have seen in awhile over something said in the presser. The thing is, it is focused on the wrong thing. Some saw this statement from JT as insulting to Buckeye fans when he answered a question from a reporter about how his emails were going, " I probably haven't gotten as many as you have, but we get lots of emails every week, even when we win, so those don't affect you any more than the effect you put on yourself when you're watching the film. Those people had nothin g to do with you deciding to do this or that.

So, you know, honestly, the thing when I read some of them is I feel terrible for them because there's no way they're happy. They've got to be some of the most unhappy people in the world, and I feel bad because we just made them less happy, and I hate to be a part of making someone less happy. I mean, they're already miserable and so to make them less happy I'd feel bad."

When I watch the presser I don't know what to make of it. Some say he was joking, and I can see their point. A good number think he was insulting to fans. I think it was a passive/aggressive thing. His tone may have been joking but look at the words. Definitely not your usual JT comment.

I think too much is being made of it. He got a little salty. He is under some pressure right now. Beyond that he is a competitor. I don't think he is any happier about that flashing neon sign that had 0-5, now rolling over to read 0-6. There was a much more important comment made that stuck out to me.

First, let me say this. I am so sure that Jim Bollman is gone that I am ready to consider some sort of bet with those that don't think so. Maybe something concerning internet silence like C_Woodson and Ottbuck did recently on Bucknuts. Since I make a living doing this, going silent for awhile is a big deal. That I make a living doing this tells you just how sure I am of this. I will go silent for a month if Jim Bollman is either the OC or the offensive line coach next year. No posts anywhere. Not here. Not on Bucknuts. Going silent for a month at that time a year is all the more damaging to me. I am that sure of what I say.

There was an exchange with the reporters that you can find in the transcript that leads me to ask the question, will it matter? In a nutshell Jim Tressel once again stated that he had no intention of changing anything or being less involved in the offense.

I do have some hope that it will. Despite the offensive scheme we have produced a large number of receivers. We have produced backs. I don't think the talent has been there for an evaluation of quarterbacks. The areas that Jim Bollman has been directly involved with, offensive line and the offense overall, is where we have not performed. An assistant at another school says that one of the biggest myths in the college game is that Jim Tressel calls the plays. I am sure they are all run through him and he has the opportunity to change them but he is not calling the game. I am sure throughout the week that he is involved in the offensive game plan. Think about this. We chide our coach for his insistence on having people around him that he has known forever. It comes down to this. It is a matter of trust. Someone on the other end of that headset that he trusts could get him to open it up. If he is sure of the voice in his ear, he is going to more sure of sending that play into his quarterback. That is why I am cautiously optimistic that with a new voice in his ear, we will find a new way on offense.

That begs the question, however, who? At least with the defense people have faith in Fickell, but who on staff do you trust to coordinate the offense? I have to assume someone on staff will be promoted to OC, and that new guy they hired as video coordinator will be moved up to coach the OL.

It may be a "new voice", but will it be a different voice? The guys Tressel has been bringing in aren't exactly household names. An OL coach from Wayne State. Nick Siciliano, etc.

I follow Buckeye football very closely, but I know very little about the coaches. One thing I see from time to time is that Coach Hazell is loved by the players, does a great job with receivers, and would be perfect for a more aggressive offensive mindset. How much of a role does he have now in offensive game planning, and how would he be as an official OC? Could he be the guy?

If a business consultng company took a look at this program and ran an audit, requesting that some coaches be let go and looking at the contribution (what they can bring to recruiting, recruiting period, coaching and development), I'd hope the new staff would be (Jim Tressel is still head coach):

OC - New Hire or Hazell promoted (both having playcalling duties)
QB - New Hire (w/ experience and can add something to recruiting)
RB - New Hire (w/ DI experience and can add something to recruiting)
WR - Darrell Hazell
OL - New Hire (who can add something to recruiting)

DC/LB - Luke Fickell (no longer co)
DL - Heacock (allowing Fickell to be full DC) or New Hire
CB - Darrell Hazell
S - Paul Haynes

The staff needs to get younger, more ambitious (people who want to become head coaches) and more innovated and aggressive. And the main thing is, open up the hiring to non-Youngstown State and hire the best possible candidate (I cannot see how Siciliano is the best possible candidate for QB Coach).

This is de-ja vu. I remember hearing the exact same crying and moaning about Woody and his 3 yards of dust offense, during the 70s. Just like JT, year after year, Woody put together teams that were among the best in the nation. The criers and moaners said this is OSU and we should be better. Then reality struck and it took two DECADES and a special man to get us back to this level.

Duane, you are the one I'm really surprised at. You of all people, I would have thought, should have the vision to see what JT is putting together here. This team is only missing a couple of pieces from being phenomenal, possibly one of the best in our illustrious history. With an experienced QB, a big talented RB, and throw in a skilled safety, all of which will be on board next year, this team will dominate with even me at OC.
So how much of the offense *is* on Tressel?
written by Mikef, September 16, 2009
So as I understand it, Bollman sends down 2-3 plays every down from the box, and Tressel picks the one he wants to run from those almost all of the time.

So does he send down three shitty plays? One awesome play that every armchair coach wishes they'd run and one crappy one that Tressel picks? You'd think that if Bollman was sitting up in the box thinking up what play to call, every call he'd send in to Tressel would make some level of sense given the current situation?

I guess, given the way things work, I don't see any reason you couldn't have a better offense with Tress still "calling the plays" as he picks between riskier option A that makes sense and safer option B that make sense, given the current state of the opponent's defense.

Big man, you don't have to hide, just go cry in your beer with me.
1. Is Bollman being pushed out or of his own design?
2. Tressel will still bring in someone with a offensive philosophy similar to his. Cry in beer.
Whether tressel will make changes and what will they be?
written by Muskiebuck, September 16, 2009
Certainly, Tressel is feeling the heat as he should be. The 0-6 record against top teams is now relevant and can no longer be rationalized away. where we could once argue that the FL and LSU games are aberrations, we no longer can do so.

The USC game was a game where we were seeking revenge and had USC exactly where we wanted i-a tremendous hom crowd like nothing I have ever seen, an agry OSU team, an inexperienced USC QB, an inexperienced albeit USC defense with 8 new starters. USC was made to be taken last Saturday and the OSU player effort was a winning one. the game planning and play calling was not.

But what can he do? Play Pryor more in the shot gun with 3-4-5 WR's to throw to. Limit Herron's carries and bring in the other faster TB's. Forget about the I formation with the type of backs we have on board right now. With Carlos Hyde playing-maybe. With our smallish speed backs?-hell no.

And above all, please stop trying to run between the tackles against a great 8 man front like USC's time after time when you know damn well it won't work. Change up once in awhile and go away from your tendency-t's called deception, Tres-and it is good for you to try once in awhile.

When you are a veteran coach making $3 million plus/year we expect you do do more with the array of talent that you have at your disposal-especially ina home game against a young and inexperienced opponent. You are underperforming fella.

Then why haven't we? Tressel diehards are trying to focus the argument on Saturday night. 0-6. Did you see these numbers from Bucknuts poster Ohio St:

Since 2004 OSU is:
24-12 against teams with winning records.
8-11 against ranked teams...

Last two years plus USC this year:
OSU is 10-6 against winning teams
OSU is 3-6 against ranked teams

Now compare that to USC: Since 2004
28-5 against teams with winning records
19-4 against ranked teams....

This from cfbstats.com

This is not a one game thing.

We are young. Someone could throw my own blog back at me on that. If not for pass failures we would be looking at this as the growing pains of a young football team. Because it was another failure, and the cause is staring even the most novice fan in the face because of the scoreboard, 16 combined points against USC in 2 games. 9 against Penn State last year. 14 against Florida in the national championship game. You want to defend JT as head coach, you will find a lot of Buckeye fans still behind you including me. Defending him as OC, and you will find yourself in very short company after another utterly pitiful performance by this Tressel led offense.

I read an article that basically said Braxton Miller wasn't the lock he used to be because of the new QB coach. Apparently his "entourage" will be monitoring Pryor's progress this year to see if tOSU is right for Miller. Any thoughts on this?

I have not heard that but is it so far fetched? It makes perfect sense. We are not getting top tight ends because of our offense. That quarterback recruits may be watching is something we need to keep in mind.

First let me say I'm not happy about the lack of points in big games, who could be. But all of this speculation over what he meant or was he insulting fans is mute. JT didn't throw the pick that handed SC a touchdown, he didn't whiff the punt block etc. The team had chances to win this game, flip those 2 plays alone and JT's style of ball would have won a big one. The linch mob needs to get a grip, the sweeping changes people want aren't going to happen this year or maybe even next.

Doesn't negate the fact that JT is a coward on offense and Nick Siciliano has absolutely no bona fides as a QB coach... so that's what TP is being told to listen to.

The issue, Hilltop, is that we shouldn't constantly be in a position where one or two spectacular plays/blunders cost us a game. By that same token, if you change two other plays, say, sneaking Pryor in for the TD on 4th and Goal on the 1 instead of kicking a FG, and maybe taking the FG late in the game instead of playing field position, suddenly we win by four. Hell, just the sneak alone would've won us the game by 1.

He doesn't coach CBs.
