I have an old relic of a football coach that I have had a longterm relationship with. I don't hear from him as much as I would like to. He is very disconnected from the world. He shows up at the library and sends me an e-mail every now and then. He has forgotten more about the game than any of us will ever learn. He coached at the high school and college level. I learned not so long ago that he was consulted by NFL teams several times after his retirement. He sent me this e-mail Sunday:

" Jim spends so much time trying to be like Russia. He wants to be an enigma wrapped in a riddle. It doesn't look like he is creating much confusion with opposing coaches but his team is certainly confused. All you young guys want more diversity. That is very much what the
problem is with the offense. Ohio State is trying to do so many things that the end result is not doing any of them well. There is some I-formation and some pro set and some read option. He throws in other things as well. Look at any other team in college football. They all run out of a basic offensive formula. I do not understand why Jim will not pick an offense and run it. The offensive line has not been good because they don't get enough practice at doing any one thing. They are having to learn different techniques for all these different offenses. They are not different sets. What you are seeing Ohio State do is switch between completely different offenses. It is not giving enough practice to the skill players let alone the offensive linemen. We see schools getting in trouble with the NCAA for trying to squeeze in more time for practice. What I see Ohio State doing is the complete opposite. They end up cutting into practice time trying to cram every offense under the sun into the same amount of time that every other school feels is inadequate for the one offense they are trying to run."
