A comment about the offense

I have an old relic of a football coach that I have had a longterm relationship with. I don't hear from him as much as I would like to. He is very disconnected from the world. He shows up at the library and sends me an e-mail every now and then. He has forgotten more about the game than any of us will ever learn. He coached at the high school and college level. I learned not so long ago that he was consulted by NFL teams several times after his retirement. He sent me this e-mail Sunday:

" Jim spends so much time trying to be like Russia. He wants to be an enigma wrapped in a riddle. It doesn't look like he is creating much confusion with opposing coaches but his team is certainly confused. All you young guys want more diversity. That is very much what the
problem is with the offense. Ohio State is trying to do so many things that the end result is not doing any of them well. There is some I-formation and some pro set and some read option. He throws in other things as well. Look at any other team in college football. They all run out of a basic offensive formula. I do not understand why Jim will not pick an offense and run it. The offensive line has not been good because they don't get enough practice at doing any one thing. They are having to learn different techniques for all these different offenses. They are not different sets. What you are seeing Ohio State do is switch between completely different offenses. It is not giving enough practice to the skill players let alone the offensive linemen. We see schools getting in trouble with the NCAA for trying to squeeze in more time for practice. What I see Ohio State doing is the complete opposite. They end up cutting into practice time trying to cram every offense under the sun into the same amount of time that every other school feels is inadequate for the one offense they are trying to run."

I agree wholeheartedly. Many have pointed out over the years that we run as many different formations as anyone in college football. The problem is that we become extremely predictable by formation, down and distance. All a team has to do is look at the formation, the down and the distance, and they know exactly what we are going to do. Rather than setting a few base formations, and then doing different things out of them, we run a bunch of formations predictably.

Is there anything more awkward then trying to watch us try to run the option? It's like watching Michael Jackson kiss Lisa Marie Presley.

Great insight and would explain why the offense if so bi-polar. I think Tim May of the Dispatch pointed this out last season.

Sehs:

I agree. Our offensive philosophy has been one of breadth of formations rather than depth. You force defenses to prepare for all of them, sure, but once they do you're stuck looking as scripted as Mike Tyson's Punch-Out. Every formation has one or two patterns you just pick up on and exploit.

I was watching the Georgia Tech-FSU game this weekend, which wasn't particularly amazing, but one thing stood out. With GT was you always figured it's going to be run but couldn't tell who was going to run it. Not saying we need to employ that particular offense or anything, I'm just saying that GT has basically one philosophy that's very deep. USC has the pro set, that's basically what they run, but it's a deep set that utilizes the talent at every position. Same with Florida, and Oklahoma, etc. OSU however is all over the place.

It's amazing that our old coach hasn't figured out what your old coach know's Duane. He is dead on with the point he makes, we run too many formations and only a few play in each, making it predictable. It is the re-ocurring theme we hear on our offense no identity. Don Shula is the first coach I can remember that spoke about coaching to your players strength's & not coaching them to fit a system they aren't suited to. It's a coaching truth I've alway's believed in and used when I coached youth football.

We didn't try a whole lot of different formations in Tressel's first 3 years and our O was bad save for good days from Clarett and Jonathan Wells.

And that guy who supposedly forgets more than we'll ever know must be watching a different football team. We've gone almost exclusively to the shotgun since Illinois so don't tell me we're running too many formations.

The WR's are improving. The OL is improving. Saine is improving. Zach Boren is improving. Pryor is going through growing pains.

1 senior starter on offense. A true soph QB. Only 1 returning starter returned to the same position.

'Nuff said.

I completely agree with the analysis. OSU is still tinkering at this point. This is partially IMO due to Hazell's involvement with the offense. Overall, it is a good thing, but it leads to a lack of coherence during the regular season.

I am not sure that OSU being a pure shotgun team is best in the long run, but it is the right move right now. No need to add any further complications to an overwhelmed Pryor. Eventually, I would like to see a pro style offense similar to USC with more 3 step drops allowing the QB to get rid of the ball quickly and the letting your athletes makes the plays.

With an athletic QB I think you spend some time on the option and you have particular plays just for that QB. However, I don' think you build a team around running. The most devastating running QBs in college football are the ones whose instincts take over when the play breaks down. This is where Pryor excels and we see the moments of awe. A player like Pryor will make these plays regardless of the type of offense we are running. For Pryor's development as well as future QBs, a pro-style offense should be preferred.

MBT Chapa Shoes can also improve your walking gait and can help you tone and shape your body. However, do not call MBT footwear MBT Lami Shoes – the company prefers to refer to them as'anti-shoes'.
