Roster questions
Written by Duane Long

As I look over the roster this morning any number of questions jumped into my mind. I want to throw them out to you. I will state the facts. I want to get your answers.

Does Jim Cordle return as the starter when he comes back from injury? JT has always maintained that no player loses his job due to injury. The line has been better in recent weeks. Shugarts and Hall have had their problems but that is due to lack of experience. Cordle did not convince me that his move to tackle was a good thing. The other question is, is the line better because of the improved play calling with Hazel more involved.

Did Jake Stoneburner make a mistake? That is a loaded question. It could be that he made a bad decision to go along with the move to tight end. It could be the decision to come to a pass catching tight end offense knowing the odds he could grow into a tight end were good.

Is Berry ready to play? I am not talking about the injury. Hamstrings are rest intensive injuries. Is he sharp? Is his timing there? Is he "feeling it"?

Did Jermil Martin get dealt a bad hand? He came here as a FB on a late emergency need offer. We had depth problems and moved him to RB. Then we offered 2 more FBs, both now playing as true freshmen, and moved at least one of the incoming freshman RBs ahead of him.

Can Thomas, Washington and Schwartz hold off Chris Fields, James Jackson and James Louis next year for the second slot spot?

Will Nate Oliver and Rocky Pentello be able to hold off the treasure trove of incoming freshman at safety that it looks like the Buckeyes are about to land?

Where is the much ballyhooed Travis Howard?

Now that he has thrown off the injury bug is Donnie Evege ready to push for playing time?

Who's got the flu? How will that impact who plays? Thank god it's Purdue not Penn State or Iowa!

I hear that Berry's not ready, he should redshirt IMHO. Why waste a year on a few games? Unless Saine or Hall get hurt that is - or get the flu.

Anyone that gets passed on the depth chart will be disappointed -- but that doesn't mean they've been dealt a bad hand. If you can't start at TB or FB here, you ain't going to the league so you are thankful for a free college degree!

On Stoneburner, I don't want to disparage the kid, but have heard he may like the golf links as much or more than 7 v 7s and the weight room during the summer!

Jermil Martin was not dealt a bad hand...he got a straight flush. He's a marginal DI talent at best, and he's got a full ride to one of the top 5 programs in the country. He should go to class, keep his nose clean, and be the best practice player he can. Enjoy the Big 10 championships, wins over Michigan, and the lifetime benefits that go along with being part of such an elite fraternity.

Nate Oliver will never play meaningful minutes at safety. The best I could see is him getting some snaps at the Star position...mostly in garbage time. Just too darn slow.
I don't really know but

Travis Howard is on the cusp of breaking out ... Just happens to be the one slot removed from playing. Players above him are doing well. Amos is surprising and Torrence brings a physical presence.

We are going into 2nd half of season - He might be called upon to deliver.

I see Oliver getting his chance to play on Defense. He is playing on both Kick Teams. That is Fickel's Request and he rewards players for that. Domicone as well.
I would thing they should give Evege and Howard some time over the next three weeks if they ever are going to get any time at all. If not, the writing is on the wall. I think the writing has been on the wall for Pentello the whole time. He is strictly a scout team player, but a good one. He should never have been given anything more than a preferred walk on status.
I have thought Grant Schwartz should be move back over to Safety along time ago. There definitely is NO room for him at WR.

The best (worst) was watching Cordle (playing LT) take 2 side steps to his left and then watching the DE run right passed him. Brewster's line calling with Cordle at LT is a bad combo!
Schwartz

Maybe we can see what Schwatz can do that QB??

A joke of course, but you have to wonder what all these ex QB's are thinking when they see Terrelle Pryor play.
