Recruiting thoughts for the month

Have things gotten quiet on the recruiting front, or is it just me?

It seemed we have a flurry of activity, actually a long term flurry of activity, then it slowed to a trickle. The lack of interesting home games puts a wet blanket on recruiting. If I were the Buckeyes I would lobby for Penn State and Michigan to be home and away every year instead of home and home if for no other reason than recruiting purposes. I know next year looks good with a veteran team in position to make a run, made more favorable by having both Penn State and Michigan at home, but I think the negatives of having both away in a year when we are young, plus the recruiting hit, make it less attractive. Besides, winning away looks better. Having the best date on the calendar so early puts us at an even worse disadvantage. Other schools get to chip away at the advtantage we gained with the USC game. They have the big hammer of an official visit to push them over the top. A couple of cases in point.

It appears Notre Dame has made a big impression on LaMarcus Joyner. There is a report out there that he enjoyed his visit to Notre Dame best. I know Buckeye fans don't want to hear it, alot of non-Notre Dame fans hate it, but Notre Dame is looking like a revival is underway. Weiss is drawing recruits. Getting his feet in the door of one of the elite programs in the country in St. Thomas Aquinas is huge.

Sharif Floyd has played it close to the vest but reports are coming out that he had a really good time here. The good news is we got him after USC and Florida. The bad news is he still has an official to Penn State, his reported favorite. Ironically, the visit is against us. To see us lose a player because he had a great time on his official visit that takes place against us just gets under my skin.

I have not heard anything that makes me change my mind that we are the team to beat for Josh Shaw. I don't like all these teams having the opportunity to fire their best shot at him while all we can do is sit and wait.

The worst part about this is there is not one thing we can do about it with the schedule the way it is. Iowa would have been a great game to have recruits in for. Who knew that before the season? It would not have been as appealing as USC but maybe we could have pushed some of the boatload of recruits to that game if we didn't bring them in for USC.

We are going to have a good class. I think if we don't have a great class it will be because last impression is the freshest and we were still in short sleeves when we had the chance to make an impression.

Duane, I thought I read that Floyd is only taking an unofficial visit to Penn State?

Pretty sure it's an unofficial visit. Apparently he posted some recruiting diary and lists PSU out of his top 5, so that has to count for something if true.

I'm curious to hear what would happen if Henderson, Hicks, Joyner, Shaw, James and Floyd all go elsewhere. Also, I'm not sold on Louis until his LOI is in, and Anderson might not have the grades either. Seems like this class could be amazing or just average overall.

Thankfully, ND probably won't be an option for Joyner due to grades. Not a concern at FSU of course, since that whistleblower stated she had a 60 IQ player she was taking tests for smilies/grin.gif

That could happen and there is not one daggone thing the coaching staff can do about it. The schedule worked against us so badly this year. You want to make that last impression. You want that last visit and most kids are going to save that last one for their favorite. Kids are kids. They want to watch big games. Other schools get to offer them visits to big games after ours. I did a blog on just get them on campus baby. Anything can happen if you just get them on campus.

We won't lose them all but we will lose someone just because we did not have the opportunity to get in there and fight for him when it was time to make a decision.

Duane, haven't seen you address this side of the Floyd recruitment, but Penn St already has 2 big-time DTs in their class. That combined with our depth situation would have to help the Bucks.
