Recruiting News

Recruiting for the class of 2010 seems to have slowed down to a crawl but the classes of 2011 and 2012 have heated up.

The Buckeyes got a massive verbal for the class of 2011 when Canton McKinley superstar defensive end Steve Miller decided to end what little suspense there was around his recruitment and verbal the Buckeyes. I only hope to see the Buckeyes land a pair of defensive ends like Miller and Toledo Whitmers Kenny Hayes again. Nobody in the country will bring in a better set of ends in that class. Both should be national top 10 and five-star players. Miller projects as a weak side end. Hayes could play the weak side but can also play the strong side so I see him lining up there just to get both on the field at the same time. Huge get.

I have been asked about Cordale Jones, the 2011 Glenville quarterback. I have refrained from comment to wait on Mark Porter and Bucknuts to release the video that I was privvy to. Cordale Jones will be the new Duane Long Report #1 player in the class of 2011. I saw him early in the year against Cleveland St. Ignatius. I could not believe he was going to be a quarterback anywhere, let alone a big school quarterback. Turns out his throwing arm was so badly injured he should not have played at all. I could not believe the difference in the player I saw in that game and the one I saw on this tape. Braxton Miller is as big as he is going to get. Jones is at least 6-4 and probably closer to 6-5. He is going to get bigger. He has the same size as Pryor. He is just as agile and just as good an athlete. His arm is just as strong. His mechanics are light years ahead of Pryor. Jones is better mechanically as a junior in high school than Pryor is right now as a sophmore in college. I have no hesitation saying he is the best player in the class.

I said I only hope to see another pair of defensive ends in Ohio like Hayes and Miller. We are looking at that happening in the class of 2012 with Greg McMullen from Akron Hoban and Chris Wormley, a teammate of Kenny Hayes. The only reason they will not be great ends is because they are young and could be great tackles. Both have good size.

You have heard about Brionte Dunn. He transferred from Alliance to Glen Oak. There is another 2012 back that you need to be aware of. Warren Ball from Columbus DeSales is the real deal. In fact, with a gun to my head, I would give him the edge over Dunn. A little faster, a little more explosive and has the better body for a sophmore. Dunn was listed at 225 last year. I don't believe that but he is still a really big kid. Ball is perfect size for his age. Both are looking at five-star ratings.

Now he is the second best. Still a five-star kid in my eyes despite not having a good junior year. He just can't match Jones measurables but Jones can match him with arm strength and athleticism. Both are solid kids mechanically. This has nothing to do with Miller not having a great year. I want to mention that. I am not down on Miller. Not at all. Size matters in football. Look at the difference Pryor and Ben Rothlisberger make with their size. They see the field better because they are tall and they are so hard to bring down.

I think it is possible because of the coaches of both schools being friends of the program but I am not counting on it. One quarterback plays at a time.

With all the smoke about Braxton Miller waiting to see how Pryor develops before potentially looking around it's great to hear we might have a second top flight QB in Ohio. Don't know if that's been the case since Troy Smith/Justin Zwick.

We really should go after both. I see more of a project in Jones personally. I feel that Miller is the QB who is more ready to come in and lead, but Jones long term may be the better QB. The good news is that Jones's dream school is OSU while Braxton still favors OSU. I can't stress enough how important it is to get both for depth. I think both are good enough athletes to get onto the field if not at QB. An injury here or a player not developing can change everything. It is so important to bring in a top flight QB every year.

Always always always take the opportunity to upgrade the quarterback position. No way would I not try and get both. If one said thanks but no thanks in time for me to get back in it, I would go after Stoudt. I would put on the full court press to land 2 of them.

One advantage to Miller is release. He gets it up and out of there quickly.

Where does UC stand with some of these recruits? Brian Kelly knows where these kids reside as well. Is it too much to assume that Ohio State will have the pick of the litter if the offense remains stagnant? If I am a good QB recruit I am looking at them thinking, "Imagine what I could do in that offense." A good QB recruit brings others with him.

Tressel and the VCR repairman known as our QB coach will have each of these QBs performing below their potential if they come here. I cant stand Tressel, happy day when he is out the door, and I dont care if he is winning 85% of his games. They are all boring even in victory, and so forth.

Excellent point. Lets keep in mind that UC beat us for a tight end, and are also in good shape with an OL that we have offered, both offensive positions that we have struggled in developing.

C'mon Duane. I love you, but your track record for quarterbacks is spotty at best. You wanna talk about not having a great junior year...Jones isn't even the full-time starter at quarterback for Glenville. Miller, like Jones, has had some injuries, but he's finishing the season on a tear. I guarantee you if he's at Glenville, he's not splitting time Christian Bryant.

This is an situation where you really need to see a kid in person. I know you don't do that, but, from what I understand from people who have watched him, Jones is as raw as can be. Anyone can look great in a 3 minute highlight film. Bill Greene has seen them both this year, and isn't nearly as high on Jones.

Offer Both !! Redshirt one of them.

If he is as good as he say he is ..... he can also be considered an 'athlete' type prospect that could play some WR.

What is my record with quarterbacks? Look around. Who has a good record with projecting the position? There is no Quarterback U. That is because they are so hard to project. Bill can have his opinion. He is good at this. So am I. So is Mark Porter. He has seen more of Cordale Jones than anyone but Sr. Ask him. I think you will find that he agrees with me. I have seen more of Jones than the video you can see. Mark has seen at least 7 full games. That he has not always been in there has nothing to do with not playing well. Sr is trying to show a different look when he pulls him out of there. Jones has elite tools. He has tools you can't teach.

Lets talk about the tape. You were not impressed with what you saw?

Who is the tight end that UC beat OSU out for? The only one I can think of that OSU had any interest in whatsoever is Alex Smith but that doesn't count of course because OSU never offered him.

The most overrated thing is seeing players in person. Do you really believe college staffs see every recruit in person? How many times have you heard a recuit say, "they want to see more tape." The NFL, the best of the best, have someone in the stands for every future opponent?

Smith counts. Why do you think the offer did not come? They were not convinced he would change his mind. They want everyone thinking like you are on this one. We did not lose a recruit to Cincinnati head to head. James could make it a moot point but they had to go after him.

If UC doesn't get James, they should pack away the footballs. A legacy whose father played there, from a school in their own town, while they are having their best run ever.

Clay Belton? Chris Smith? Devante Payne? None of those guys even sniffed an OSU offer. You're still the man, but no one's perfect.

The tape is nice. Very nice, actually. He isn't in Pryor's league as a pure athlete, but he's close. Definitely a better throwing motion at the same stage. I'd love to see a full game tape before I could say what kind of passer he is at this stage. Certainly has all the tools, but there has to be a reason he still splits time with Bryant. Decision making, accuracy, poise, etc are impossible to gauge from a 4 minute highlight tape.

I still like Braxton better. His arm is better than Jones', as is his motion. And he's a better runner. Cardale would be catching his passes if he was at Glenville.

Regarding Alex Smith, I see what you're saying. I still think it's premature to count it as a UC win though (from a UC vs. OSU perspective). He won't end up at OSU but I'll be surprised if he ends up at UC too. I'd put my money on Wisky or NC right now.
Cordale Jones
written by Ray Jeske, November 06, 2009
Just another take on Jones. Have seen him play two complete games now (Iggy and John Marshall). Saying the obvious, but physically he is incredibly impressive. If you've ever wondered what Daunte Culpepper must have looked like at 16, go see Cordale. Talk about passing the eyeball test!

As to his athleticism, Duane, I actually saw him beat McVey to the corner for a first down. It was crazy. Never seen that before against McVey.

Throwing mechanics are nice. Now it's just about learning the mental game. Hope he has "it", because the physics are amazing. His quarterback coach, Scott Nedzwicki, is a buddy of mine. Hoping he's successful, but it seems to me that Scott's a little concerned about the overall lack of structure within the program as a learning environment. But physically, wow. Not saying he is/will be definitely better than Braxton, but the mere external appearance isn't even close.
