Minnesota Game Thoughts
Written by Duane Long

I am at a loss to explain the lack of enthusiasm for this win. I think we got some things going right for the first time in a few weeks. This was not a game that we looked like a national title contender but we did look better than we have in weeks and I would say we looked like a pretty good football team.

First, I have to get this off my chest. JT just can't stop playing it safe. It hurt us early and could have been devasting if Minnesota was not so mistake prone, not to mention their quarterback not looking like the player we thought he would be. Talk about going backward. We go down the field with good play calling and execution. I thought we were sure to score when JT decided to go for on fourth and short. That we go for it, run Dave to convert, and Bryant Browning gets not one but two guys as the lead blocker was a triple good omen. Then we get nothing on a first down quarterback draw, surprise surprise, Pryor throws late and short to Posey in the corner, though Posey should have caught the ball, then JT runs a play to set up the field goal. One bold call was all he could bring himself to make. We miss the field goal. We get nothing because we play it safe. Disco is dead. So is that way of playing football. The game evolves. Tressel doesn't. It worked back when polyester was all the rage. That is the point of the game evolving. Someone trying to defeat a certain way of winning. They have succeeded. JT doesn't seem to get that. Play it safe, don't make mistakes, wait on them to lose it to you. It no longer works. I have always given JT credit for being an intense competitor. I am losing faith in that. It seems to be more important to him to do it his way than it is to win football games. Very frustrated with that first drive into the red zone.

Griese, a Purdue guy, thinks the criticism of JT is ridiculous. Spielman thinks it is deserved. That starkly shows the difference in the programs. At Purdue this would be glory years. At Ohio State it is not good enough.

We have to recognize how much better Pryor is out of the shotgun and no huddle. It is proff that he is thinking too much. Line up and go. He shows what he can be when we go with the hurry up.

Forget about the rest of the mechanical problems. If Pryor would not start throwing the daggone ball off his front foot I would bench him. Big ol'd gun of an arm but still underthrows receivers all the time, or he is high. Posey should have caught that ball in the corner of the end zone but if Pryor finishes the motion, steps through onto his front foot, the ball is on Poseys outside shoulder and an easy catch. On the first touchdown that they did hook-up on, Posey had to wait on the ball. All that arm and he is underthrowing wide open receivers, and in this case with no rush in his face. Another problem with the lack of stepping through is the high throws. It is really costing us. It is becoming obvious to every DC we go up against. No throws in the short or medium range in the middle of the field. When Pryor misses, so often it is high. You can't let him throw over the middle except the last third of the field. Enough of that. Make him throw off his front foot. That puts maximum velocity on the throw, so no underthrows, and gets his hand over top of the ball so no high throws.Whatever we need to do to make him do that needs to get done. It makes us a better team and him a better quarterback.

Posey dropped three balls in the first half, one a touchdown and another that goes inside the 5. I don't care if it was a bad call. It was but if he holds onto the ball we don't have to worry about the zebras. Too many drops this year for a player as talented as Posey. The great ones make all the catches they should and some of the ones they shouldn't. He is capable of greatness. Great game for him but it could have been, no, should have been, a better game. Great to see Pryor and Posey finding each other. DCs started to see that Sanzenbacher is Pryors go to guy. Started to take that away from him. Posey is a game breaker. He and Pryor getting their act together could reap huge benefits, especially if we can convince Pryor to step into his throws and get it out there to him.

We have been good at punter for so long. Thoma is solid but he is not the weapon we are used to with our punters.

I wonder what could happen if we gave Saine the ball 20-25 times once? The line looks like they could be primed for some smashmouth. Saine is averaging over 5 yards a carry. He is never going to be an elusive guy but he is fast, strong and has great balance. Feed him and lets see if we can help our young quarterback.

John Simon is too young to be this smart a football player. He always gets my attention when he is out there, usually with a very heady football play.

Rolle is playing well but Ross Homan is the best linebacker we have.

Thaddeus Gibson had his best game of the year. He played the run and rused the passer so well today. I have been hearing 2nd round if he comes out early. Games like this will push him into the first round.

Jermil Martin breaks off a 40 yard touchdown run? Didn't even show as a runner in high school but shows he can help at this level. Who woulda thunk it. I think inserting him was smart and could be telling about the state of Saines injury. Taking Hall out tells me we may be looking at him as the starter next week. Can't take the chance on getting him injured. It also tells us Berry is not ready to play.

24 points off turnovers. Against Wisky 21 points off turnovers. At least one other game double digit points off the defense in the last 5 or 6 weeks. You can win alot of football games like that.

Ohrian Johnson just stands there and lets the receiver not only catch the ball but waits on him to run him over at the goal line instead of attacking him. I have heard good things about him since he arrived on campus. Still waiting to see it with my own two eyes.

I always thought we should have offered Marquise Gray. He should get a shot at the starting job. We talk about Pryor regressing. Gary is their best quarterback.

If we win out I think we can go back to the start of the second half of this game. Getting the fumble on the kickoff then Pryor taking it in seemed to do something to this team. I saw a little swagger come back into the team. I saw the confidence return. It looked like they are again thinking they are a pretty good football team.

I disagree with the comment on Pryor underthrowing Posey. I thought it was smart and that he intended to do that. As a QB, in that situation, you want to accomplish two things: 1) Get the WR the ball, and 2) Get the WR the ball. If you underthrow it, it means that you have not overthrown it. Overthrowing a wide open WR would have caused frustration and definitely brought out the boobirds.

The worst an underthrow does is cause the Defense to catch back up and possibly prevent a TD, and making make a play on the ball, depending on how open the WR was.

Outside of that, I agree. Pryor must stop throwing off his back foot.

I find it hilarious that you are criticizing JT's evolution while using Spielman to supposedly prove a point.

Spielman is largely a neanderthal when it comes to modern football.

I almost threw a brick when Spielman said that OSU's linebackers only had to "follow the guard" when playing Navy's flexbone. Yes, Chris, that is the only thing teams have to do when playing the flexbone. You are just the only person to have figured it out.

He had a number of stinkers this game too. His diatribe against TP's reads were asinine. "He needs to read short to deep"...really, Chris? Not every modern pass play is read short to deep. Maybe it was in the 80's. And unless you designed the play, I'm curious how you know how it is meant to be read.

I really wish he wasn't an announcer. It ruins the image of him as a great football guy.

I really don't understand your point about Spielman. Based on what I read in your comment, it actually supports my point. Even another guy from the dark ages thinks this is old fashioned.

I thought Martin looked pretty darn good. Granted it was near the end of the game. I was kind of thinking about seeing a pro set with Pryor, Saine, and Martin on the goal line could be really effective. No doubt Martin and Saine are our most physical backs at the moment.

I thought I once heard the announcers say Tressel calls all the plays in the red zone. Thought that was interesting. I wonder how this game would've gone has Minnesota not imploded the entire second half. That said, that implosion was helped along greatly by the defense. They played very well. I just wish our playcalling was as aggressive between the 20's as it usually is inside the red zone.

But, it was a good win. And I think it was progress. We need to focus on the reality that this team is still a work in progress, and any development is good.

Spot on as usual, Duane. There is so much going on with TP between the ears it isn't funny. We had a chance to sit him down for a half or so and let him watch what opens up. Better yet - let him spend a half in the press box so he can see what opens up. I would imagine they do that with film, but it would be interesting to have him talk through his reads live with a coach and see what he would have to say about where he likely would look and check to. Or maybe I don't want to know.

But he doesn't have the confidence. I think the more wide open a guy is, the more of a lob the pass will be. I guess it beats throwing it right at a WR when he's 20 yards downfield instead of leading him to the outside and away from defenders, or when he's throwing it at Sanzenbacher's heels before he's even come out of his break. Not only has he struggled with reads, but he doesn't appear to have good command of what the routes are supposed to do - when to throw, where to lead, ball placement, etc. A year and a half and he's still throwing to the spot where the WR is at release instead of the spot the WR should be when the ball arrives. I saw so many good in stride passes on a very windy day for the Spring game that I bought in. Mea culpa.

It's between the ears. We have seen him get nervous before big games. scUM last year, USC this year - he can't get started until he's lobbed it off to a defender to put our defense's back against the wall. We saw the snap at Guiton on camera when he wished him luck. I think yesterday was a huge game for him, and he couldn't hit a thing for the entire first half - which was apparently much better than pregame warmups. I wish we could run a naked bootleg and let him get plastered to get his head in the game like Madden used to say about Brett Favre, but that doesn't appear to work. They need to do something so he comes out with fire, passion, confidence, and success. We can't afford to be lethargic in the final stretch. I still think no huddle to put the D on their heels is the way to start off, and I'm just hoping we're saving that.

I talked with a friend who sat behind the bench at Purdue. We talked about TP sitting with coaches and white boards in between series - I told him I didn't remember seeing it before and was asking if ESPN was keying on that for some reason or was it new. He said he saw none of that last week. Chalk one up for someone getting everyone on the same page in these prime teaching moments, but not happening previously? Really?

Griese Taco really cracked me up yesterday in the game too. Something is not right with him the last two years, but it was nice to see him come back and correct something that was said -- the reason JT hadn't taken the Bucks to the Rose Bowl was due to so many NC opportunities -- without acknowledging that he was the one making the bonehead comments in the first place. And the diatribe against JT last year in the scUM game when TB came in? Apparently he thought we forgot about that. I guess he likes JT better when Terry Robiskie isn't in his ear.

Duane, this is off topic, but I wanted to ask if you could do a blog on Cardale Jones to compare to Braxton. Also is he in the same class as Braxton? Do we have a shot? Do a detailed blog and lay it out for us. smilies/smiley.gif

Griese's long-running employment as a color guy is a great mystery.

I was surprised we ran the Dave play so much yesterday -- nearly 15 times by my count -- after it appeared we'd given up on it for the season. And we ran it well.

There's been talk that Fragel is ready to be an o-lineman. From the looks of him on the field late yesterday, wearing #88, he needs to put on 50 good pounds before he's a number in the 50s, 60s, or 70s.

Wow Pryor made mistakes he always does. He also made a good amount of phenomenal plays few can make. The pass where Posey fumbled was a thing of beauty. He was more decisive in his desicion making and made very few mistakes.

What do you really want? If Pryor plays like that every game, this team won't ever lose. His line played better and what do you know he played a whole lot better.

I don't know how you write an article about Minnesota and highlight it by negatives. It is a young team and they are still growing. I saw a lot more good than bad in that game. I guess it's a popular trend for people in Ohio to constantly complain.

People expect Pryor to be Peyton Manning with 4.3 speed. People are quick to say Tate Forcier and Jacory Harris are better and look at their weeks. Forcier is awful and Harris threw a horrible pick 6 that changed the game. Jimmy Clausen. He made a million mistakes as a sophomore and yet still makes a ton as a junior. People talk about how great he is when he's on ND but if he was on OSU he would have been crucified.

As we all know, offense is about getting into a rhythm and confidence. When you lack those things nothing works. When you have them an offense looks good and at times, unstoppable.

I sincerely hope that there are big time shake ups with the offensive staff in the off season. I fear that Tressel will be lulled into believing that its not the staff but just a young team.

As i was reading your comments about JT's conservative play I thought about Alabama's play the last few weeks (can't get away from the SEC here in GA to my dismay. It seems Nick Saban has taken a page from JT's winners manual. The tide has an outstanding defense and good special teams and are just sitting on the ball offensively. They have a good running back but will not put the ball in the QB's hands or be very creative or take much risk on offense. I'm not endorsing the conservative play (I wish we would pick one offensive style and stick with it and embrace all aspects of it be it the I-form or spread or what ever) but it seems JT gets beat up for it and Saban praised for it. any thoughts.

He keeps making them. The same mistakes over and over. It means everything for his development and for the team to get better for him to FIX HIS DAGGONE MECHANICS.

To be honest I'm not sure he's ever thought it's anything but a young team, but I could be wrong. I suppose Hazell's increased input in the offense is a sign he might be getting it.

Duane:

People are less enthusiastic about the win becausse the second half offensive explosion was Gopher gift wrapped. Buckeye fans (rightly or wrongly) appear to be entering a Missouri stage (show me) and are withholding enthusiasm until an explosion happens against a better team or does not occur courtesy of the other squad's ineptitude. Other points. 1) The Buckeye running game has hurt the team all year. Saurday, Martin ran with passion and punished defenders. It would be great to see more of him. JT's offense works best with a big back who breaks tackles and pushes the pile. He is just the type of back we need against Iowa and PSU (and even Michigan). Advance the chains and punish the defenders in those games, and with our defense, we'll win all of those games. 2) In my view, your criticism of JT's playcalling should be more nuanced. It's not too conservative--as I mentioned before, with the right team conservative play calling affords the best chance of winning. But, even utilizing this conservative approach, the play calling must exploit opportunities. When you have a short field on change of possessions or get a take away, you can't consistently call off tackle plays on first down (such an approach does not apply maximum pressure to the opposing defense)--on those occasions, the play caller should show creativity and attack the defense. One big play in those situations can open the flood gates. Failure to do so in big games has been Tressel's Achilles heel (losing to Texas in 05 and SC this year in games that OSU should have won and could have won in convincing fashion). Your criticism of running on third down in the red zone to assure a field goal is spot-on. It's like a wasted play, and as JT found out Saturday, doesn't even automatically result in a FG. 3) Some words on the OL. Your best criticism of the team has been the staff's failure to recruit sufficient numbers. The Bucks need more competition and quality depth. Adams has been a disappointment thus far and Shugarts, while showing promise, has lacked consistency and made too many whiffs on pass pro. More guys to up the competition level would be great. We need 3 more this year--I hope we get James and Henderson (it looks like Linder will go to ND). 4) Finally, if the staff is going to use the TE as another blocker, we need a good blocker at that position. Ballard has been abysmal at pass pro this year--way too many whiffs. It is frustrating to see our guys look like they don't really want to hit someone in pass pro.

Seriously, what do you want from him. He threw a couple bad passes but threw a lot of good ones. Every qb makes mistakes. Look at Jacory Harris, he stared down a reciever and cost his team with a pick 6. Look at Jimmy Clausen, he throws a lot of bad balls that should go for picks. He made one of the dumbest plays I've ever seen vs UW throwing a terrible backwards ball that was returned for a td. Tim Tebow threw 2 pick 6s. McCoy is turning the ball over a ton this year.

Every college qb makes mistakes. The main thing is that Pryor grew from the Purdue game and made a big stride forward by not crumbling in the 4th quarter vs Purdue and having a pretty good game vs Minnesota. He is moving forward. If you keep expecting him to be Peyton Manning with 4.3 speed you are gonna be a bitter old man for the next couple years.

Brett Favre has made a career off plays you'd consider poor mechanics. Pryor is not a traditional drop back qb and will never have Peyton Manning/Drew Brees mechanics.
