New Mexico State game review
Written by Duane Long

Solid win. 45-0 looks great but we did not play well. I credit JT for recognizing his team had not woken up, or was looking ahead to Penn State. He threw an onside kick and a reverse pass in there and the Buckeyes came alive and focused on the task at hand. Put away this really bad team. Mismatches like this are not in the best interest of the game.

I think we saw a more settled Pryor today. I saw more of the throws that still make me believe he could be a #1 overall draft pick. The slant to Sanzenbacher was a thing of beauty. He stands in there with pressure in his face and delivers a strike on taget. The receivers were excellent today. Well, except for Taurian Washington. He finally works his way back on the field and they throw him the ball. He drops it. I would not put him back on the field. I would not want to be in a position where we need him to make a catch. Get someone else ready. Posey and Pryor are more in sync every week. Good to see Carter on the field more and showing the kind of hands that will make him a star. He has been missing the last few games.

Who is the best back on this team? Every time he is given a chance Jordan Hall looks like he could be the man. Explosive quickness and he sees the field better than any back we have. Fearless too, especially considering his size.

I am concerned about a few things. In the spring of 2008 I thought Joe Buaserman looked like a potential starter. He was the best looking quarterback in the spring game. His time on the field this year brings me to question whether his form has anything to do with Pryor not being benched during that bad stretch. We have seen little of Bauserman this year and he has not impressed. In his most extended action since he has been here, he did not impress.

I am concerned about left tackle. We need to leave Miller alone. Cordle is getting killed out there. I am not convinced he can be a right tackle. I am absolutely convinced he cannot be a left tackle. We need to quit on this one.

My biggest concern is Petrey. First, I want to say it was bush league for the New Mexico State player to cut block a kicker. How many games have we lost this year to cut blocks? The block should be outlawed. If he is out any length of time we could lose a game because of it. Tight games are often won by kickers. I saw nothing from Barclay that makes me think he can win a game for us.

Not really much to say about the defense. New Mexico State was not a good defensive football team but they were awful on offense. Getting worked up about dominating them would be like claiming you are the baddest kid on the block after beating up your little brother in the backyard.

Now that we got through this one I hope it was looking ahead that made the first quarter a little uncomfortable. It means the team knows how important next week is. The Rose Bowl is ours if we win out. Iowa has stumbled to an undefeated season. They cannot play like they have been and beat Ohio State. Michigan is going backward. Penn State makes the season for the Buckeyes.

I have not gone back and watched the game again yet but I'm pretty sure that Corlde was solid at left tackle but it was Miller that got beat a few times...

duane, pryor the #1 overall pick as a possibility? I really thought you knew what you were talking about. if you cannot pocket pass like manning, brady, palmer, brees etc, which tp is not even in the same discussion with, than he's a mid round pick at best. running means nothing in the nfl, just look at the best qbs.

He is a sophmore. Fans keep forgetting that. He is coming along. We see flashes of what he is capable of. Lack of consistency is what he needs to master.
We are seeing great plays out of this kid but too many bad plays. He has tools. He was the #1 player coming out in the class of 2008 for a reason. Give him time. We will see a revamped offensive staff next year that will help with his development. This kid can be what everyone thought he would be coming out of high school. Give him time.

Duane i tell people that on bucknuts.com all the time. People see Jacory Harris and think that TP should be performing on that level or beyond. I think next year the game will slow down for Pryor. He'll have a entire season of him making throws, and see what he's doing right and what he's doing wrong. I do think the staff needs to find a QB camp to get him into ASAP.

I am unimpressed with OSU, PSU, and Iowa. That is a good thing. All three teams are sloppy, undisciplined, and at times lost on offense. Conversely, all three teams have pretty good defenses. The top teams from the other conferences will make any Big Ten team pay for their mistakes, but it is good enough in this conference.

I don't think OSU has any excuse to lose the rest of the way. It should be expected that they beat these three teams. The loss by USC last night makes that loss to USC look even worse. I see a team that has now underachieved for the past 3-4 years. If we cannot win the Big Ten, Coach Tressel's seat should get awfully hot. OSU cannot continue to be only a school for defensive players and expect to be considered elite. How we play, who we play, and who we beat matters. Perception absolutely matters to recruits, pollsters, and to those that support OSU financially. I just hope the light goes on for Gene Smith and Coach Tressel.

duane, I will give him time and he will get better. I hope he wins us two titles. but #1 overall pick? no way. 1st rounder, maybe. after the vince young debacle, the nfl will never pick a "athlete" that high again, let alone #1 overall, unless he is a great passer first. not to mention vick even after 4-5 yrs in the league was an avg nfl qb at best. what did he ever win. his nfl stats are avg. you get picked #1 overall because you can throw the ball -- end of discussion. running is irrelevant in the nfl. now matt barkley can be the #1 overall. the kid stands in the pocket and throw ropes all over the field. wait until how good he is in another yr or two. and tp was the #1 hs player for his running first and foremost, not passing.
Changes?

What changes will happen? And are you 100 percent sure that it will happen?

Thanks

Im not sure you are the best talent evaluator Duane. I would love it if you were right about Pryor, but there is no way he is a number one pick overall. It looks to me as if he has regressed from last year. I blame that squarely on the coaches. The whole team on the offensive side of the ball looks clueless. Im also not feeling the Jordan Hall love like everyone else, he looks very average to me. I hope Rod Smith is a beast next year as a Freshman, its our only hope.

i want one of you that is ready to write Pryor off to tell me what you want to see from him at this point in his college career. I doubt any of you can say what it is that you expect of him. He is half way through his sophmore year. I will point this out once again. At this point in his sophmore year Troy Smith was not even in the mix.

Tell me what you expect of him.

I'm not ready to write off Pryor, but he doesn't look so great when you compare him to other QBs from his recruiting class who also saw significant playing time as freshmen, like Jacory Harris, Jordan Jefferson, Andrew Luck, or Robert Griffin (pre-injury).
He has done more with his feet this season than those guys have, but they all have much better completion percentages and yards/attempt.
I just think that Pryor has a longer way to go as a passer than these guys. Also, watching Jacory Harris especially, he just seems much more comfortable in the pocket than Pryor does.

You're making the assumption that NFL teams will learn. It's kind of like saying that no one will draft solely on being a workout warrior, because there are so many examples of those guys busting. Yet every year it happens.

Now, I'm not saying these guys are/were any good, but there's Vick, Young, and Russell that I think were all picked in the top 2 in recent history. Despite Young's supposed 7 on the Wonderlic. Despite Vick barely throwing the ball in college. Despite Russell not starting nearly enough games to justify the draft position. NFL teams are in love with the measurables. If Pryor can put it together, get his footwork right, stop staring down his primary receiver, it's certainly possible. Not saying it will happen or that I think it even should happen, but it's possible. But he's got a lot of growing up to do on and off the field I think.

Everyone seems to high on Jacory Harris he has made some plays, but threw and awful pick six that really cost them the game at Clemson. Pryor would be getting roasted for that, but he gets a pass on these boards. the grass is always greener. He is progressing and every quarterbacks progression is different. With his raw talent his ceiling is still higher than Harris. Jefferson really has been asked to do as much as Pryor. Look at their scores the offense has not been impressive most of the year.

Duane...I havent written off Pryor just yet, but his mechanics are the worst I think I have ever seen from a QB at his level of competition. Im trying to think of someone, anyone, who looked worse, and I cant. It looks to me like he is getting by on raw athletic ability. I really wish Tressel would bring in someone with more credibility to work with arguably the biggest blue chip recruit in OSU football history. Its unbelievable in my mind, and it was last year when I heard Joe Daniels was sick, that Nick Siciliano was going to be the guy responsible for mentoring Pryor. I really hope to God that in the offseason Gene Smith steps in and we hire a QB coach with a proven track record to get Pryor up to his potential. It probably wont happen, but I wish it would. Anyways, lets hope that this is Pryors coming out party against a quality opponent...we shall see on Saturday.
