I saw the Glenville-St. Ignatius game last weekend. I wanted to update my thoughts on players in that game.
First, I want to point out that Scott McVey is injured. If St. Ignatius had a more veteran team he likely would not have been in there much this year. He injured his shoulder in the first game of the year and played through it. I have received so many e-mails about him from this game as well as others. He is not himself. He is a smart, tough, dynamic player with a great burst when healthy. Still a top ten player. I am concerned about the fact that he continued to play with the injury. Not good for his college career.
If you have not heard St. Ignatius turned the ball over 8 times, including 5 interceptions. It was the most lopsided game in the history of this rivalry. 4 of the interceptions were by Latwan Anderson. He returned one 100 yards for a touchdown. St. Ignatius had been making a comeback until that moment. It broke the game open. He was another level in this
game. Christian Bryant would be getting accolades in any other game. He just happened to be on the same field as Anderson. A couple of players who are not getting enough attention are Jarone Elliott and Rondell Pierce. Both standout every time I see film of them. Elliott harrassed Myers, the St. Ignatius QB headed to Pitt, all night. He had much to do with the bad passing night for Myers. Rondell Pierce is just a football player. He is all over the field making smart plays. He is always around the ball. Someone is going to get great players in both these kids. The lack of offers makes me wonder about academics, in particular for Elliott. Pierce plays linebacker. He is not going to be big enough to be an every down linebacker. Maybe not fast enough to play the Star or strong safety but someone will give him a shot if he is eligible. Too good a player.
Underclassmen. Wynn did not touch the ball a lot. He is so quick. You can see he is moving at another level of speed. Fearless too. That is the thing I love about the kid. He might be a buck fifty five but you will get every ounce of it out of him. I am still not sure about Aundrey Walker. He should dominate and he doesn't. Massive kid. He is listed at 330 but is more like 340 or 350. The thing is, he is not that much overweight. He is that huge.Robert Walton is not a Buckeye caliber kid, especially with the players here and those coming in, but he is a fine back. Smart, tough, great balance and runs with great determination. He is at least a MAC back and could be a lower tier Big Ten player. The player I am stuck on is Andre Sturdivant. I like the football player. Someone asked me was he like Brian Rolle. I said no. He is bigger and not that quick. Is he big enough is the question. His read and react are good. His run is good but not quite Brian Rolle. He is one to watch.
Lastly, I loved what I saw out of Cardale Jones. 9 of 22 is not a great night statistically but he showed so well throwing the ball. His mechanics and his arm strength are both excellent. He throws the deep out with velocity. He is a fine athlete that can hurt a defense with his feet. He made one throw that was incomplete that was the best pass he threw all night. He threw to the back of the end zone. Nobody was really open but he put the ball where his receiver had a chance to make a play but nobody else did. He also had a touchdown pass dropped. He needs to work on his reading but that will come. Sr is not letting him off the hook. The biggest misconception about Glenville is that players get coddled. Nothing could be further from the truth. We saw it in this game.
Late in the game, as Glenville was trying to put it away, Sr called a timeout. Obviously it was to put a play in. Cardale threw the ball into the ground. During the dead ball Sr came out on the field so far that I thought he might get flagged. He said something to one of the receivers. After getting a response he went ballistic on Jones. That little meeting broke up and all went to the sideline. Sr just happened to notice Jones standing just about five feet from him and went at him again. He was livid. After Sr went back to the game, others went and patted him on the back. Sr in his face screaming and the kid listening. No attitude. No sulking. That is what will make him as good as he can be.
