Football Friday - Iowa
Written by Duane Long

Iowa was having every break fall their way. They caught a superior Penn State team on an off night for their biggest win. Still, they have a solid defense and a couple of good receivers. I would be worried about this team if not for the seniors on defense. This is senior day. After the midseason lull where it looked like this team could come apart, they rallied and can go out with a trip to the Rose Bowl, the first for the Buckeyes since 1996. I don't think they will come out flat. Vandenberg is a freshman. He has thrown 30 passes. He has completed 36% of them. There is a difference between nightmares and night terrors. I want Vandenberg to be able to tell you what the difference is. There is no running game to speak of. We want to continue the momentum that has gotten started with the offense. Good running game and good decisions by our quarterback. Majorly important things we want to see coming out of this game. Get up on them early, put them away, get some young guys in to gain experience on the field and experience the special occasion of senior day in the 'Shoe.

Word has come down that Keith Wells is redshirting. That is great news. I loved him from the time I first saw his film. That he is being redshirted tells us that he is staying with the program.

Word is Charlie Weiss is out at Notre Dame. I don't like the names coming up. Brain Kelly and Bobby Stoops. Brian Kelly has been a thorn in our side at Cincinnati. He is going to be a bigger problem at Notre Dame. He has already established ties with Ohio high school coaches. Bobby Stoops has Ohio roots too. Both bring another player into the Ohio recruiting battles. Until Weiss we did not see Notre Dame very active recruiting Ohio. I was always surprised Lou Holtz did not recruit Ohio harder. He was born in Ohio and was a coach on the 1968 championship team.

There seems to be a good deal of chatter about Rich Rodriguez being out at Michigan. I
don't believe it and I think it would be a mistake. He has been recruiting players to fit his scheme. They made the commitment. They have to see it through. Michigan has to start over again if they fire Rodriguez.

I am not optimistic about the basketball team. Once again Matta is short bigs. Since Oden and Hunter, Matta has had one big, B.J. Mullens. No, I don't count Kosta Koufos. He was tall. He was not a big. Bigs are not allergic to paint. The closer he was to the three-point line, the happier he was. There is no offense coming out of the inside players. When David Lighty is being counted on to be your #2 rebounder and to defend a power forward, well, we better shoot as well as we think we are going to. We are going to need to score alot and we can't count on second chance points. 2010-2011 is the team to watch. The six man class is arguably better than the Thad Five. I see the same balance. We have not seen that in recent classes. Two bigs in Sullinger and Thomas who have superstar early entry ability, plus J.D. Weatherspoon who seems to get the label swingman but he sure looks good down low, a truly elite swingman in Jordan Siebert who brings range and a great floor game, a big shooting guard in Lenzelle Smith who brings a good handle and a strong body, and a point in Aaron Craft. Keep an eye on the academics. Several of these kids still need to qualify.

I bet the only people who got it right about Jay Cutler were fantasy football fanatics. I thought it was one of the all-time dumb moves by the Broncos. It still might be, but right now I bet Cutler would do anything to have either Brandon Marshall or Eddie Royal. Having both is making Kyle Orton look like a different quarterback. Cutler has thrown for 14 touchdowns but 16 interceptions and 2086 yards. Orton has 1836 yards and 9 touchdowns and only 4 interceptions. It looked even better before Sunday night.Orton went into the Steeler game looking at 9 touchdowns and 1 interception. Cutler needs a quality go to guy in the worst way.

Agreed on Cutler but I believe the problem may lie with him. He is a poor decision-maker at the position. A lot of guys with strong arms are- they believe they can make any throw work when they are under fire.

Every time the Notre Dame job opens up, you hear a cavalcade of names from the who's who of coaching. Davie, Willingham, O'Leary and Weiss have been their last four hires, and Faust was the one before Holtz. I'll believe a great coach wants that job when they hire one. Urban Meyer laughed in their face. I just don't believe the Notre Dame job holds the luster it did back in the day.

BTW, Lou Holtz wasn't exactly Brian Kelly or Boob Stoops when he took that job, he was more Sabanesque, only not as successful.

I would rather see Kelly at Notre Dame than Michigan, so I hope the Irish get rid of Weis before Michigan gets rid of Rodriquez. At ND, Kelley will be a thorn in our recruiting side, but at Michigan, he'd be a pain in our gameday donkey.

I agree that as much as Kelly at ND would (will?) suck, it'd suck worse if he was at Michigan. At ND we'd only have to deal with him in recruiting. But who knows. A few years ago a lot of people thought the same thing about RichRod going to Michigan. A lot of people (not just UM fans) wondered when, not if, he'd rule the Big Ten.

One thing I've kind of wondered about RichRod is the same thing I've got to ask about Kelly now. Will his system adapt to the 5* players? I know that sounds really weird, but RichRod's system formed dealing with players of a certain kind, which weren't usually the highly recruited types. Does his system adapt to the 5* player type that he can get at Michigan? So far the results have said no, but it's early and their defense is terrible. Will it be the same for Kelly? Maybe that's just smoke, I dunno.

I also don't see Bob Stoops going to ND at this point. That's a lateral move from a place like Oklahoma, and he's been there long enough now to set some roots. Plus he's right next to a great state for recruiting, where he's only really battling Texas and maybe LSU for Texas recruits. At ND he'd have to battle with OSU, PSU, and Michigan for Ohio's recruits, which just aren't in as great a supply when compared to Texas (due to population numbers). It's the same argument for why Urban Meyer wouldn't go to ND at this point. He's got a great thing going at Florida and is dominating a recruiting hotbed as Miami's struggling to regain prominence and FSU is steadily slipping into mediocrity. Why give that up? Beano Cook's one-sided love affair and the Four Horseman?

I think Stoops comes down to just how much heat there really is on him. He is running into the same kind of heat as JT. He has some high profile/big game losses that has brought him some negative attention. We might see just how much as this process unfolds. That sideways move may be appealing.

Cutler in my eyes has always been overrated. He is an average QB in a league full of BAD QBs. Some of the throws you can attribute to his WRs, but most of them are the same bad decisions that he made in Denver. Everyone always thought Cutler was a positive force on that team. Orton is showing that the QB just needs to be a caretaker in Denver. I've never seen so much hype for a player that has yet to prove he's a winner. Against bad teams, Jay Cutler puts up gaudy stats, but when a competitive team comes around, the REAl Jay Cutler shows up.

Inspite of the argument in the win loss column I do think Penn St. ia a better team than IOWA. Vandenburg is not just going from HS to the college game as a frosh he has to do it against our D-line, I feel for the kid what way to start Mr Vandenburg meat Mr Heyward and his buddies. Ouch.

I think this version of the BB team is going to be fun to watch, but the lack of a big man is going to be thier undoing when they play NC, M St. and other big ten teams. It will take a lights out performance from the 3 point line to hang tough, run cold in those games and they could lose big
