2011 quarterbacks
Written by Duane Long

Ohio is not known for producing quarterbacks. That is why I don't really need to do any research or much pondering on whether the class of 2011 is going to be the best quarterback class ever in Ohio.

Braxton Miller and Cardale Jones are the best quarterbacks I have seen in Ohio and it is not really close. I know some will mention Justin Zwick. I saw him play twice as a senior and once in an all-star game. I never saw him be a great quarterback. I was on record at the time as saying Troy Smith would win the quarterback job. He did not have the same tools so Zwick was rated higher. Smith was not even a sure qualifier until right before he committed. Both Miller and Jones have better tools.

Mechanics - Both of these kids will come in and be able to immediately start absorbing the play book. I don't see where you can find fault in either as far as motion is concerned or with their footwork. Both plant their feet and deliver the ball off the front foot. I would say Miller is the more consistent with his mechanics but neither will force a college coaching staff to waste time ironing out the kinks. All high school quarterbacks need some tweaking but with these two it is part of the process of becoming a college quarterback, not getting back to basics before they can start becoming college quarterbacks. Miller has the better release. As quick as you will ever see.

Arm strength - Both have fine arms. On a scale of 10 I would say each rates at least a 7 and more like 7.5. Jones might be an 8. Plenty of arm strength for both. They can throw the deep out and get the ball 50-60 yards down the field and have the velocity to get it there before defensive backs can break on it.

Running - Both excellent runners. Both are very athletic. I think Miller has the better top end speed but both are dangerous runners once they break the pocket. Miller is the more elusive and has the better top end speed.

Intangibles - This is where Miller has the edge. He is already quite a polished kid. He is the more ready to step in and play early. Jones is so raw. He is just now getting the coaching he needs to realize his potential.

Bottom line - I see two five-star recruits. I want both to wear scarlet and gray. If I have a gun to my head I take Jones. He has the better upside. He is a bigger version of Miller. He is so raw. He has had so little coaching. We are just now seeing him scratch the surface of what he is going to be in time.

I need to remind everyone of Cole Stoudt. Any other year he is surely the best quarterback in the state. Another quarterback that will be someone to watch is Walsh Jesuits Connor Cook. He is a big mobile kid. Very athletic. Runs great. If he shows the arm next summer he will be a hot commodity.

Jones has made huge strides this year. The difference between Game 1 Glenville vs St Ignatius and Game 2 was like two different players. Obviously a coachable kid growing into the position. Great, big athlete. Could probably play wideout if QB didn't work out (didn't hear 40 time, but moves very well). Will be interesting to see how much he continues to grow next year.

There was a lot of chatter, some coming from Dave Biddle, regarding Braxton committing to OSU in the last week or so. Is this something we should keep an eye on in the next few days, or will we not hear anything definite until after signing day? Or is this just smoke?

I wish Braxton Miller would commit early. A big name QB has such a positive impact on other recruits outlook of the class. I like that we won't need to rush either into starting as a freshman. Pryor will be a senior when Miller would be a freshman. I see Miller as more of a Jacory Harris type of player. Pryor along with Miller could begin a new QB tradition.

I am a firm believer in this staff bringing in two QBs. OSU cannot continue to have such poor depth at such an important position. Ideally, I would like for OSU to have a couple of QBs who we feel confident in. I feel like the last time OSU had a reliable backup was when Scott McMullen was backing up Craig Krenzel. I love Craig Krenzel and think he was the perfect man for the job, but that he is one of the better Buckeye QBs in the decade is astonishing at a school like OSU.

If the staff could land both Miller and Jones, that would be quite a coup. It's exciting to dream about the possibilities. As good as our past two recruiting classes have been, 2011 has a chance to be a once in a coaching career type of recruiting class. Looking forward, there is so much to be excited about.

I think Miller will eventually commit. Jones would commit if he was offered. That being said, I'm tired of "dual-threat" quarterbacks. I'd rather have a dropback pocket passer that can consistantlly get the ball to our play makers.

I thought I remembered reading on numerous occassions that Miller had very poor stats for this season
Question For Duane -

On another site - A fellow like yourself who does this for a living made a statement that Miller's decision making towards OSU is based of the notion that they ( His Family) are looking at Pryor's development at QB. Things have cooled as they are not impressed with T.P progression to date.

It sounds practical to make a decision of the programs history but to squarely base it off one player ? View point sounds short sighted.

Your thoughts ?

Bet those statements came around the Purdue game. Huge strides made since that game.

I agree w/ crusher. #1 QB attribute from here on out ought to be a polished passer. Not a standing glacier like some Michigan QB's like Henne or Navarre; but guys like Iowa's frosh, Colaros, and other frosh that have pure passing skills seem to make the transition from HS to college much quicker. They aren't spending as much time w/ mechanics, footwork, and timing and can concentrate on learning ALL the offense and reading defenses. It is my 1st hand experience that a college-ready-effective QB is not always a 2-3 yr. process if the raw material....isn't so raw.

Three comments on QB's:

1. Duane, forgive me for asking this, but how long have you been reviewing/analyzing high school talent? I ask because you mention 'best ever in Ohio' at times, so I am not sure if that is from watching talent the past 5 years, 10 years, 20, years, etc. I am curious to know if you include Art or Grbac or Hoying, etc. in your comparisions of Jones and Miller.

2. If Jones is really that 'raw' then is it fair to wonder if Siciliano can handle the development of this kid? Siciliano may have some talent, but he is no Joe Daniels (or Walt Harris) and it's not even close at this point.

3. I have heard that Hendrix may be reconsidering OSU now that Charlie is apparently headed out. Will Hendrix possibly ending up at OSU impact the decision/destination of Graham, Jones, or Miller?
