The rest of the spring notes
Written by Duane Long

I just realized I cut yesterdays post off. Here are the rest of the comments about spring.

<<<I want to grab Devin Torrence and shake him. He has so little time at corner. He could be great. Can't hit a baseball at this level to save his life. NFL corner if he had played there the last 3 years. He has size, quick feet and will hit. Needs to quit baseball. He needs to quit now.

Speaking of great, C.J. Barnett. Play him this year. He is an early exit talent.

Keith Wells needs to get his priorities in order or he will never play here. He could not be more unfocused.<<<<

The Rest of the Spring Notes...

I definitely agree on Torrence. Hope he decides to forego baseball this summer if he can. In regards to CJ Barnett I will trust your judgement but I think it might be a bit premature to call him a three and done at this stage. It may turn out that way and I hope he is that good but let's wait and see. He is in there with some pretty good CBs Corey Brown, Clark, Howard and perhaps Joyner and Bryant coming in. Though I have heard they move Barnett to S. I agree with you regarding Keith Wells. The first thing that he could do to show he has the right focus and attitude is put on some muscle. As far as I know he is still at the same weight (210) as when he came in. This year could be a make or break year for him. I am surprised that no one reflected on James Jackson as I thought he showed some real promise in the Spring Game.

I was a Line Judge in a game that CJ played. He kept hitting the WR and wouldnt let him past the 5 yard mark. It was pretty intertaining.

Love this stuff, Duane. Gives good insight. I presume Storm will be a three-year starter with lots of time this year. Wells unfocused? That's dangerous for him, especially with how deep we are said to be at that position.

Duane, any eyes on the safety spots? I'm very curious to how Ohrian Johnson and Zach Domicone are coming along with the 2nd string.

Nothing said one way or the other about the safeties. I will ask.

I'm interested in hearing if Soloman Thomas has kept up his effort that we saw during the spring game.

Wasn't Keith out for spring too? Can you ask him what he means by unfocused if he isn't playing? Is he just goofing off during practice and not studying hard or what?

Devon Torrence looks like a STUD...

Big, strong, fast and will flat out knock your face off!!!!

If he had been focusing on CB the past 3 seasons he would be the starting boundary corner this season without a doubt...

Has anyone heard if Devon has decided to focus on football (and perhaps a future paycheck) or try his hand at basebore again?

Earlier this phantom know it all was ripping another
player that did not participate in spring drills -
now he is on another young man that was held out of practice. What's up with this.

Tressel said he was going to sit down and talk with him about it after spring ball. That's the latest I've heard.

In the case of Kieth Wells, it sounds like it has as much to do with what he is doing off the field as it does on...

The "phantom know it all" is a former player. The Wells comment has everything to do with off the field.

The starting safeties next season will be O.J and Hines...

After Hines graduates I fully expect Zach D to take over...

On a side note, I would like to see get some work with the first team D at safety at Russell's spot...

I just need to get some clarification here, what is the difference between the boundary corner and the free corner?
...
written by dvo45, June 04, 2009
Boundary corner typically plays to the short side of the field...

Field Corner to the wide side...

I talked to Coach Johnson at the OSU Coaching Clinic and learned that is the OSU defensive systems, the Boundary corner also needs to be the better all around corner because they like to do a lot of different things with him...

The field corner really just plays loose man coverage on the #1 WR to the wide side of the field...

There are tons of ways a kid could be failing himself and loafing even when their not participating physically. Most of the game is mental. He might not be watching film or blowing off meetings or not doing his rehab diligently.
