2. Urban Meyer - I could say Saban and Meyer are really 1a and 1b. Meyer just has not had the reclamation projects that Saban had. Nobody can claim a more sparkling record. 2 national championships in 3 years. An undefeated season at Utah. Going 8-1 twice in the last 3 years in the toughest conference in college football. You are not going to find a guy who has accomplished as much in such a short time.
3. Greg Schiano - The one thing that puts Schiano this high on the list is what he is doing with what he has. He is not getting blue chip recruits. All the others do. Rutgers had not had a winning record since 1992. They had not had back to back winning years since 1986-1987 (6-4-1 and 6-5). The Scarlet Knights are coming off 4 straight winning seasons.
4. Pete Carroll - Bet you thought he would be higher on this list. I am no hater. I know some people who have come in contact with Carroll. They say he is a great guy. Yes, he has won 2 national championships and has played in 5 straight BCS games but when you look at the assembled talent that is not good enough. Has there been a school stack talent in the 85 scholarship limit era like the Trojans? Maybe the Miami teams in the late 80's/early 90's. He manages to lose games he shouldn't in a conference that is not very good.
5. Butch Davis - The most underrated coach out there. He has the taint from his time with the Browns. They guy can flat out coach, and he is a great recruiter. North Carolina was never a good football program. They are now.
6. Jim Tressel - Great coach and a great recruiter. He is an even better man. Some recent high profile loses have taken some of the luster off.
7. Mac Brown - Recent Texas teams have helped Brown put the label of a guy who cannot win the big games behind him. One of the great recruiters in the sport and a true gentlemen.
8. Bob Stoops - Another big time football coach haunted by some high profile shellackings, and the loss to Boise State.
9. Frank Beamer - The best coach to never win a national championship. No recruiting base to speak of but still has 16 straight bowl appearances, including 3 BCS games in the last 5 years.
10 (tie). Gary Pickel - Before Pickel arrived to run off 4 straight winning seasons and 5 in 6 years, Missouri had 2 winning seasons since 1983. One of the most innovative coaches in the game.
10 (tie). Gary Patterson (TCU) - So off the radar I felt like I needed to note his school but what a football coach he is. Since taking over the reins at TCU Patterson has had records of 10-2, 11-2, 11-1, 11-2 and 11-2 in 8 years. He has an overall record of 73-27 and has taken the Horned Frogs to a bowl game very year, and won 5 of them.
Who I left off and why:
Mark Richt - Class act all the way around but loses 3 games a year like clockwork. Is a great recruiter and has a great recruiting base in Georgia but has at least 3 loses in 5 of his 8 years at Georgia. Major success at most programs but at Georgia that won't cut it any more than it did Earle Bruce here.
Steve Spurrier - Won 6 SEC titles in 12 years. Averaged 10 wins a year while at Florida. Finished national top 10 in 12 seasons. His record at S.Carolina is why I am leaving him off. He is not recruiting like he did in Florida. He is a guy that can be off putting. Being away from the Florida recruiting base is showing. Lou Holtz won 8 one year and 9 the next with the S.Carolina recruiting base.
Les Miles - How he ever got the LSU job is beyond me. Never lost less than 4 games at Oklahoma State. Went 8-5 last year and had a losing record 2 years after winning the national championship.
Joe Paterno and Bobby Bowden are both at the top of any all-time list but right now they are not amongst the elite guys.
