Montana and Hendrix
Written by Duane Long

I was shocked to see Nick Montana chose Washington. My money was on Stanford. I did not see Washington as a player. I forgot who replaced Ty Willingham. I checked and the new head coach is Steve Sarkisian, a highly regarded quarterback guru. It now makes perfect sense. Stay on the coast like his mom was adamant about and get groomed by a guy that knows what he is doing with quarterbacks. Good luck to him. He was a classy kid throughout this. Handled himself well.

The timing of the offer to Hendrix shows a staff that has found its recruiting mojo again. Maybe Montana told them thanks but no thanks but I believe they saw the handwriting on the wall not just with Montana but with Hendrix becoming the hottest quarterback commodity in the country. I think it shows we are committed to taking a quarterback in this class. I could not agree more. I think quarterback is the most important position on the football field by a clear margin. I want to have talent stacked at least 3 deep and preferably 4 deep. I want Hendrix. I think he is a talent. I am still not sure about Bauserman's return. I know it has been refuted by Joe himself but I still have not have heard from that private source that he is definitely going to stay. He is not going to make a public statement, Buckeye fans. Come on. For the same reason that players say they are returning to school and then leave, Bauserman is going to wait until he is ready to go, and it makes sense for him to go. He can play for several years and maybe have a shot at the NFL. Neither is going to happen sitting behind the Franchise. Even those convinced he is coming back have to acknowledge the logic that leaving is in his best interest. The one hitch, a good hitch, is he is a more mature guy. He knows from experience. that the pros is another level. He knows how hard it is, and he is not ideal sized. He may be more interested in Buckeye Nation post college. I can't believe that Guiton is going to be a quarterback at this level. He looks like he could be a steal as a wide receiver. Someone whose opinion I respect greatly says he is at least 6-3. One of the needs high on the list this year is a big split end. We could get one and not spend a scholarship in a smallish class. He is emergency depth for one year and that is all. I like what I see out of Hendrix as a player and I love what I am hearing about him. He is such a competitor. Neither Pryor nor Miller will impact his decision. I like kids that believe in themselves and have that driving desire to win. I don't care about his numbers. You can see how little college programs care about them. Numbers mean so little. That is one of the things I have tried to get across to you over the years. Remember, Roy Hall caught 9 balls as a junior. Yes, I said 9. He had offers from Ohio State, Michigan and Florida State before his senior year started. Great looking prospect. Great move to offer when we did. Great idea to add quarterback depth no matter who is a definite lean this way in the future.

MONTANA AND HENRIX
written by dbuckeye44, June 10, 2009
Duane I am with you in being surprised at Montana's selection as I too thought it would be Stanford. This had to be a knee jerk decision because as late as last week Washington was not in his top 3. However, should we get Hendrix I think we will be getting an equally quality recruit. Montana may at this time have a better head on his shoulders thanks to the influence of his father but Hendrix may be the better passer. Hope I don't have to find out but I wonder what we do if Hendrix does not elect to join us? You are not alone in being skeptic of Bauserman's return however if he does come back this year it would make transferring less attractive in the future with his only having one year left. I trust the your judgement and the judgement of others but I am not sure that Guiton could not turn out to be a college QB. Regardless whether he does or not his recruitment supports the strength of our staff in that we got him so late and he is multi-skilled. One other point that I disagree with you on is the insignificance of stats in evaluating QBs. I read once where Bill Walsh said that the number one thing to look at in evaluating a QB is his completion percentage. Out of respect for Walsh I have to agree.

Duane:

Glad to hear you are so high on Hendrix. What has changed (I know you always considered him worthy of an OSU offer) to make you think that he is a national caliber QB? From the short video I saw of him, he looked athletic but I was not overly impressed with his arm strength. How would you rate his ability to throw the football (accuracy, touch, short passes, out patterns, deep balls) compared to other prospects? It would be hard to believe that he would choose ND over the Bucks--what do you think of OSU's chances vis-a-vis the Irish? BTW, do you think the Daniels situation had anything to do with Montana going to UW?

Saw the picture of Nick on Bucknuts and man does he look like his dad. For a skilled legacy to avoid Notre Dame I'm guessing the relationship of Joe and his alma mater is not as close as it was.

It is amazing to me to see the Buckeyes become a school that gets the attention of top QB recruits. What you said about QB position being most important was particularly true in the rivalry with Michigan under Cooper. In all but 1 or 2 years, the team with the best QB won!

Yeah, and Roy could never crack the starting line-up despite his immense athletic ability. Rob Schoenhoft also had mediocre stats in high school yet big time offers and he can't even hold onto the starting job at a D-1AA school.

I think it should be a concern that Hendrix only threw like 12 td's compared to 8 int's.

I'm not Duane but the fact that Andrew has offers from Ohio State, Cryami, Tennecheat, and ND says he's a national recruit.

His arm strength is good. He makes some accurate throws without losing velocity.
Qb pool is very weak.

Not buying the continued rumor pitch with Bauserman. He's involved with all team activities and
made his remarks. Since we are embarking on Summer
conditioning - it would seem foolish to make a decision this late in the calendar year. If he is thinking NFL - he might want to re-visit the spring game tapes
and be grateful for his education.

Any QB at Moeller HS has had to win some QB competitions in his life and should be confident.

STOP DISRESCTING K. GUITON!

Duane:

I've been checking out your threads and noticed that you reguarly bash K. Guiton and the kid hasn't even made to campus yet. WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS?

I am urging you to stop bashing this kid. Stop putting thoughts in the minds of the Buckeye faithful that follow you so regularly that this kid isn't or wasn't worthy of an offer from tOSU. H

In case you didn't notice, he's a BUCKEYE! HE'S SIGNED AND COMMITTED!
Unless you got some inside scoop that you are willing to share or ideas from the staff that he can't be a QB, then you need to stop!

Nasty: If he's seen his film, and he doesn't think the kid deserved a scholarship, then that's his opinion. OSU isn't immune to reaching. They struck out on Tahj Boyd, and he left them scrambling for a viable alternative. Duane clearly thinks they filled the slot, but not with a quality alternative. He doesn't appear to be going out of his way to bash the kid. Additionally, while he doesn't like Guiton as a QB he thinks he "could be a steal as a wide receiver."

He is likely going to drop down some in level of competition if he leaves. Stay here. Use the superior facilities. Practice against superior players.

He is not a Buckeye caliber quarterback period.
Follow-up on Guiton
written by BuckNasty, June 12, 2009
Hey Guys:

As always, I appreciate and respect your opinions. You and my man Rips always have good posts. My only points are that its fine to say the kid isn't going to be a QB at tOSU, but don't bash him. Give the kid a chance to get into camp and if by July you have this same opinion then type away.

I don't like limited film reviews and don't like prognostications on a 17 or 18 yr old. Let the kid come in and learn the system and let the coaches fairly evaluate his talent without bashing him. I am sure they see something or they wouldn't have offered.

That's all I am asking for at this point. Give the kid a chance to compete. That's why he came here.

You got to keep in mind there are some weak minds on this board such as the anonymous poster who don't know the game, don't watch any film nor know the game. These things take on the life of there own, so feed into this.

Case in point: There were many that looked at the offer to Troy Smith after having behavior trouble in HS and the removal of Justin Zwick as bad moves. That didn't turn out to be so bad did it? Give the kids a chance and let's let the field form our opinion. That's all.

Sorry to get hacked off on this one, but I couldn't sit back another moment and read bashing on what appears to be a good recruit to fill a gap.

Thanks for the line to vent.

Take care gents!

This is a kid whose best offers were Kansas and Iowa State before the Buckeyes came in with an offer, and that offer was after the kid from Kettering Alter decided to stick with his verbal to a MAC school. He is an emergency backup and will move to WR if the Buckeyes get someone this year.

Actually I dont think that was a bash. I really didn't see anything negative written about him except he won't be a QB here. Re-reading the piece again I noticed Duane stated the kid could be a good pickup at WR. Even called him a steal at WR. Not sure how you can evaluate a player without critiquing his downside somewhat.
