Loved what I saw from Jon Newsome. High motor kid with a great first step. Naturally quick. I always saw a kid that I thought would grow into a legit 4-3 defensive end but he showed tonight it really doesn't matter. He can play as an edge player. He could be a 3-4 stand-up linebacker. Last time I saw him play a full game it was the same thing. A relentless kid with the skills to go with it.

I was impressed with Melvin Fellows. He showed what kind of athlete he is by playing as a stand-up strong side linebacker for most of the game. He uses his hands and his length very well to keep blockers off his body. I still don't know where he is going to play. He is so lean but you see such a massive frame. He is going to get in a college weightlifting program and who knows where it is going to take him. Love the raw potential.

I have been saying since his I saw his junior film that I would give Corey Linsley a shot at defense. Last year he played defense and was really impressive. One of the cardinal rules is, if you have a big who can play defensive tackle, you let him play defensive tackle. Etched in stone rule. Just give him a shot for the first few few days of fall.

The Pennsylvania defense was going to make sure that Chris Fields did not beat them. That he was a marked man says everything about what kind of talent he is. He opened up the field for other players. Micah Hyde is a very Hines Ward like player. Nice get for Iowa.

I have cautioned against getting excited about playing freshmen offensive linemen. Anybody see Marcus Hall tonight?

Longo was solid. I was not expecting him to be after the reports coming out of Pa all last week.

Adam Bellamy didn't do anything to catch my eye other than the fumble recovery.

I see why Austin Boucher was offered before the more physically gifted Kenny Guiton. First, he has quarterback skills. He plays the position very well, but what I saw that really impressed me was a kid who showed leadership, guts, nerves of steel, daring, and the kind of competitive spirit that is so central to our love of sports. During a sideline interview he showed a confidence that inspires others. After the last Pennsylvania score they showed him on the sidelines warming up with a gleam in his eye. He wanted to be in that situation. He stepped on the field and made the play that won the game. When he was standing on the sidelines warming up another player came up to Boucher. He was not tense. He was loose and talking to a guy he has just recently met like he had been playing with him for the last 4 years. I don't think Guiton is going to be a quarterback here but I do think he has the chance to make a great impact as a receiver. Boucher may not have had the tools to be a quarterback here either but I think his contribution in the lockeroom would have had a great impact as well.
