Where is James Louis scholarship coming from?
Written by Duane Long

Now that the excitement of landing a great prospect like James Louis is over it is time to look at the fallout. It is over Buckeye fans. I understand the angst. It is not without merit. I am saying you have to look at the big picture and the big picture tells us that Florida has a number of verbals and are in good standing with several others who are at least as good and could be better. It is easier to convince a kid who is on the fence to come your way than it is to soothe the ruffled feathers of a player who is committed to another school that has showed him the love. They are also looking at 17 verbals with only 3 linemen on both sides of the ball committed. They have the attention of several players you just don't say no to. Louis is ours, Buckeye fans. But I digress.

Coming down from the high of nailing a verbal from a great looking player, we see the number staring us in the face. We have 16 scholarships. Stop counting the ones we may get. You cannot recruit like that. We have 16 and are looking at 9 verbals. I threw out my list of players who I thought we would get. Someone was going to be left out when I made that post. Now we have a surprise verbal. We are getting uncomfortably close to needs only list. I see Christian Bryant as in. He will not make a verbal until later but we know he is coming. Chad Hagan is likely to make it official before the season starts. We wait until signing day for Jordan Hicks. That leaves 4 spots. I wanted 4 OLs in this class. That is not going to happen. I accepted that some time ago. I think we need 3 but we have to have 2. I will believe we only take 1 when I see it, so one spot for another OL. That leaves Ty Williams, a TE and Will Hagerup from my list. I think that is where we see a player dropped. Recent news has me leaning toward Ty Williams or TE.

Gary Hosteau's recent news was not what we wanted to hear on Williams test score but I can't believe that we would back off him this early. When a kid is having trouble making a test score you make a decision about him, wait or not to wait. I have to think a really special athlete at this position would have to emerge for us to back off. I think the staff sees a special talent who wants to be here and are not having to put alot of time into his recruitment. Little pressure from other schools on Williams. Drew Basil verballed. That would have been the time to end our recruitment of another punter/kicker. We still did not back off Hagerup. The staff has thus far refused to offer another tight end in this class but have rolled out the red carpet for 2011 tight end Ben Koyack. He is the one with the Buckeye offer. Tight end is where I think we see us shave off a scholarship.

I hope we are doing this again soon. It means that we have gotten Corey Brown.

What does that mean?
Has Corey committed or not?
Is the Orlando paper accurate or not?
Is the staff just being quiet about this?
What about Williams' scores?
I don't want a TE in this class!

Why do you say 16?
Are you saying you are still holding for HYDE? I am not counting Hyde or Turner have qualified until they are actually qualified. I think this class gets closer to the number 20 by 2/3/09.

Count Henderson in it.

I'm not really sure what you're trying to say in your first paragraph but I'd be happy with that class, especially if that other OL is Henderson.

Duane, I love ya, but you are all over the place and incoherant.

Not really sure what you're implying about Corey Brown there Duane. With the full court press of Koyack and Stoneburner moving to TE I have to think we're backing off the position for this year.

Talk about all over the place and incoherent. Is there a comment or a question or both in there? Help us out.

You have not seen the buzz about Corey Brown and the Buckeyes? He has been rather quiet. Now there is some chatter that we may lead.

Yesterday when we talked about Louis there were a couple of fans speculating that we are going to have trouble hanging onto him. I assumed everyone read that.

Ok, gotcha'. If they have a decommit or two, do you think they might recruit him again or has the bridge been completely burned? He fits in so well with their style it surprises me they don't want him more.

There are so many kids that they have a shot at. There are 3 in Florida alone that are special players at receiver who they are in good shape with. That does not include Christian Green, a national top 100 kid who could be a receiver. They have 2 receiver verbals plus Matt Elam, another top 100 kid who could be a receiver, is a verbal despite the fact that he is talking about taking other visits. All would be rated as as good as Louis or better. I can't believe they are going to miss on all of them. There are some wait until signing day talents who have Florida on their short list. Even if they wanted to come back on him I don't see them having the time. The staff will not go to sleep on this one. They will continue to use the allowed contact opportunities to make him feel like part of the family. Hopefully we will hear about him helping to recruit other Florida players.

They're gonna have more than 17 scholarships to give out by the time NSD rolls around, I would almost guarantee it.

There's room for all three of Williams, Louis and Brown. The latter two could play other positions as well.

OT- I just saw the scoutingohio film of Tony Foster. Why is there no buzz around this kid? His acceleration blows me away and he's transferring to Glenville! Mark Porter says he only has offers from MAC schools.

You can't guarantee it. This is a young team. That is why we have so few scholarships to offer. Alot of reps to be had out there. There are no more than a handful of kids that it would even enter their minds to leave the program for more playing time. There are so few kids that are candidates for early entry. You can't project a single player who would surely be early entry candidates like we could last year with Wells. Someone would have to emerge. Who is a candidate, who would also be draft eligible? I see the second year kids, players who are not draft eligible, as being the kids who are most likely to step up as names to head early to the Show. Pryor, Posey, Brewster, Nate Williams, maybe Mike Adams and Shugarts. You have Gibson, Chekwa and maybe Heyward of the third year players. We talk about Karen Holbrook but outside of Small we are not seeing academic problems. Even if there are players leaving the program, how do you recruit "assuming" someone is leaving? You have to know. You can't come up with 18 scholarships when you need 19. That is what I am trying to get across to fans. You have to know. You can't guesstimate. Sorry kid. We did not have as many as we thought we would have does not work with recruiting. Bet the farm the staff is not sitting around saying we "should" have this many. They will only go with the number they are sure of. Maybe they know something we don't. There is no reason for there to be a larger number than 16 right now. Of the short list of players who could be contemplating leaving the program, why would a player decide now to leave after this year? Might as well go now if that is your mindset. Like I said, there is no obvious early entry guy. That will have to happen after the season. After they prove themselves. At that point they can add someone to the board. Whatever the number is, only the staff knows but you can bet it is a number, not a range.
First come first served - Recruiting calendar has
written by JT, August 01, 2009
Many have spoken that the recruiting calendar has changed in the past. Here is just one example on what it will do to a smaller class. In the end it is going to help the smaller schools out as players will emerge and some will be left watching the paint dry as they chosen team moved on before they made there decision.
How about the players that did not want to be put in a holding pattern until OSU made up its mind. Recruiting has changed its time table and there are different dilemmas today than there was a decade ago.

No, unfortunately I decided to save my money on the premium services at Bucknuts. It's worth it usually, and the free boards can be like taking a cheese grater to your face at times, but money's tight and I generally can catch a snipper of information here and there. Unfortunately it means I miss out on a lot of good information as well.

I really had only seen that the Corey Brown chatter had died down, so I assumed once we got Rod Smith we must've moved on. Apparently that was a bad assumption, which is interesting.
