I think it comes back to they have a player in mind. I can't guess what that might be. I am not seeing a common thread. I see what looks like classic SS and FS combinations. Damicone is a classic SS. So is Nate Oliver as well as Gant. Bigger guys that were good at the line of scrimmage. Good instincts. Physically tough guys. Good tacklers. I see Johnson and Pentello as classic free safeties. Long and athletic. Both play really smart. Good high school quarterbacks. Guys used to making decisions. Jamie Wood could be what they are looking for. I look at the current SS types and would very much not like to ever see any of them playing free safety. I don't want to see them as the last line of defense. I don't want to see them need to make a play on the ball against a good receiver. I don't want to see them have to make the decision about whether to play the ball or the man. I see them defaulting to their comfort zone and that means too many pass interference penalties. I have more confidence that Johnson and Pentello could play strong safety but I really don't want to count on either to make a physical play in the box. Wood could be the player they are looking for. He can play either. I think he is so athletic you want to keep him at free safety but he can come down to the line of scrimmage and hold his own.
