I am looking at next years lineup. We are all looking at a veteran battle hardened offense and getting excited. We need to take a hard look at the defense. That is where the concern is.
We are not going to miss a beat at linebacker. I think we will be better. The starters logged a lot of reps and Spitler is the only player we lose. His contribution gets overlooked. He has been a solid guy but the talent level at linebacker is off the charts. I think we are solid at corner. Torrence and Chekwa loaded up on game reps. I like the talent waiting in the wings. The bowl practices is where we see these younger players take a leap forward. I am scared out of my mind at safety but where the biggest problem lies is with the bigs on the defensive line.
We are deep as deep can be on the edge. I think Gibson is gone but that just creates an
opportunity for the talent we have stacked. Nate Williams would be a starter anywhere else and is the better player as a pure 4-3 defensive end. Jon Newsome looked so good they decided not to redshirt him. No problems there.
The importance of Cam Heyward returning cannot be underestimated. The domino effect of him leaving early impacts the entire defensive line. He has played three positions and played them all well. If he is not there at strong side end we have a depth and experience problem that has to be addressed. It means Mel Fellows is the starter. He will be a very inexperienced sophmore. His backup will be true freshman J.T. Moore. The only real answer is to move Simon out to end. That means a big hole at DT. I have heard good things about how Bellamy is coming along. I was disappointed that as the year wore on we saw less of Goebbel. I don't know if they felt good about the rotation or the staff felt like he was was not ready. Either way his playing time dropped. That is where Floyd comes in. He is a kid who can play at this level right away. There are not many bigs that can do that. Larimore is the real deal. We want a three-man rotation. Larimore and any two of Floyd, Bellamy and Goebbel allows me to settle back in my seat. It is still a very young bunch at the three big line positions but the talent level is something that gives me reason to be cautiously optimistic.
Think about this. What if we get Floyd and Heyward stays? Here is another thing to think about. Robert Rose is odds on to get a medical redshirt. He did not play a lot but when he was in there he was an effective player. I did not think he had it in him to be the player he was last year. Now that is some depth to get excited about.
