Scholarship numbers

It has been awhile since we have talked about the size of this class. The immortal Holmes said, ".....when you have excluded the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." I made the point months ago that you can't recruit on maybe. They have to know, and I am going to show you why. First, I want to note that we are looking at a mimimum of 19. We have one announced transfer. There has to be at least two other players leaving the program to get to 19.

What we re seeing at three different positions shows why you have to know. Look at defensive tackle. We brought Hankins in. We would not bring him in right now knowing he is likely to verbal with Floyd still out there unless we could take both. The same goes with James and Henderson. There has been this buzz for the longest time that we would only take two OLs in this class. That boggles the mind, but that is not what this post is about. Henderson is more highly prized than James and things look good with Henderson. With Norwell onboard, if there was no chance to take three, the staff would try to push James until as late as possible. Get as good a read on Henderson as possible before bringing James in. The other possibility is they know they have room for three. At safety we know that Bryant and Anderson will be Buckeyes. Anderson still has some grades to clean up but everything appears to be fine. The Buckeyes already offered Verlon Reed, a player who may be a quarterback but will be a safety if nothing else. Now we see a late offer to Bradley Roby, a kid from Florida who was on the radar early. He was mostly being talked about as a receiver but he looked good at camp as a defensive back. We see this offer right after we see Joyner choose Florida State. I don't know about the Buckeyes taking four defensive backs but it looks like they are looking at taking at least three. What if Reed is a quarterback? That makes you think four more scholarships available. That makes you think 20-21.

That is not crazy. 13 commits, not including Turner. We are not saying no to either of the DTs and we are not saying no to either of the OLs. Not going to happen. I don't know about James but the others you have to like what we are hearing. I think we get both DTs. I think we have a real shot at Henderson. We know the Glenville kids are already Buckeyes.You have to know you have the numbers. You don't go back to players of this caliber and say we have filled our slots.

We are hearing enough right now to think we have the room. The bad side is losing some player early that we really don't want to lose. It is seeing some players transfer that we may want to keep.It will be interesting to see who else goes. I don't like some of the names I am hearing.

Say the names you are hearing, this will just turn into a guessing game. Providing names related to this is something of interesting and eminently publishable.

DBids reports Tressel said today the number is 20.

14 = Graham, Brown, Smith, Louis, Williams, Norwell, Baldwin, Moore, Durham, McVey, Turner, Hagan, Basil, Hyde
16 = Bryant and Anderson
17 = Reed
18 = Hankins
19 = Henderson or James
20 = Hicks, Floyd, 2nd OT from above, Roby, Heard?, etc.

Seems like A LOT of competition for 20 (3 guys we would not turn down, a brand new offer and a slow-play we want to visit).

That sure seems like we are planning no more than 2 OL and not getting 4 of the last 5 I listed. And all this is before Tressel's usual last-minute "who the hell is that?" offer.

I have said for a year, that we were getting to the point that linebackers, wide receivers running back, and defensive end were not seriously going to consider OSU because of the depth on the roster. In tandem with that, the players we have recruited the last couple of years are not going to want to sit on the bench and get 15 plays a year when they can go someplace else and play right away. Depth and talent are great, but kids today want instat gratification.

Is it too late for some big time boosters to pay for Shaw, Joyner, Henderson, and Floyd to come to OSU? I want a mega all star team of recruits. I say by any means necessary. And to further my football fantasy, can someone pay Tressel millions of dollars to keep his hands off the play calling so I can be entertained again? I get chills thinking about his horrendous play calling.

The players rumored to transfer are at least Taurian Washington and Lamar "Flash" Thomas. Way to go Tressel.
