Official visits

Seantrel Henderson has decided on his 5 visits. Not the dates for all 5 schools, just the schools. Ohio State, USC, Notre Dame, Oklahoma and Florida. Ohio State, USC, and Notre Dame are set. In addition to seeing USC, Henderson is seeing Notre Dame as well as Ohio State when they play USC. I don't know about you but that is like drawing Big Slick pre-flop in Texas Hold'em for the Trojans. Bill Kurelic is reporting a top receiver from Florida is visiting for that game despite the fact that he is a heavy favorite for one of the homestate Florida schools. Nobody believes that Chaz Green is leaving the state but he is coming up for a visit during the USC game.

I could go on citing other players who we really do not look good for. Some players who have publicly stated a favorite. We are still bringing them in. I have a box full of e-mails asking me why the staff is doing this. Why are we letting these kids "play us" like this. The answer is very simple. To get them on campus. We may be behind with them. We may be an afterthought with some. The coaching staff could not care less. Ohio State has such tradition and such impressive facilities that all we want is a chance to show it to them. So many of these kids know little about Ohio State beyond seeing them on television maybe a couple of times a year. Mr. Bucknuts passed something on to me one time that he had heard. A guy was asked, "What would you do if you won a million dollars?" The guy responded, "First, get the million dollars." You can't ask the girl out until you get her number. You can't worry about whether she will say yes or no until you get her on the phone. All the staff cares about is getting them here and have a chance to impress them. We never go over the official visit maximum of 55. I see no reason to sit on them. What if we just change the mind of one kid? We have done it before. Before you get out your depth chart I will point one out, Etienne Sabino. National top 50 player. One of the top 2 or 3 linebackers in the country his senior year. It was easier to name the schools he did not have an offer from than the ones he did have. He was not a player we were talking about a lot. If he leaves the state he will go to USC. That was the thinking. We got him here, he was blown away, he committed a couple of weeks later. I would say the same with Keith Wells. Nobody thought we had a shot. Got him on campus and closed the deal. What if just one of these kids who we think we are just providing free tickets to for one of the ten biggest games on the college football calender changes their mind? That is all the staff wants. All they are asking for is a shot. It begins with the visit.

Al Davis said, "Just win, baby." Fans should say, "Just get him on campus, baby."

Duane,
Do you remember a few weeks ago when you and I disagreed on recruiting the top fifty players. That is about what we have ended up doing. This post is further proof that OSU is trying to recruit the best players, no matter how good or bad a chance that we will get them to commit.

Charles, If you want all hugs and kisses you can go to PBSKids.org. This a real fan site with differing opinions. Not all of it will be roses nor will all of it be thorns.

And he probably turned off the Anon feature to cut down on all the trolls who just like to stir things up.

I agree Trojans are being dealt a good hand but it will certainly come down to if Seantrel is comfortable playing 1000 miles or whatever away from his family. The main thing I see with this game is not attracting recruits just for this year but the future ones. Maybe Chaz Green, Shaw, and all the others don't come to play college ball in Columbus, which they more than likely aren't, but if they enjoy their visit and tell other players down there how great Columbus was it creates a positive buzz. I've never really heard a recruit come to a game and not like his visit. We got Marlon Brown for the Purdue game and supposedly he nearly committed. The couple grand or whatever it costs to bring these top players here is well worth it considering the revenue the football program brings in.

My only concern is that guys who aren't really interested start recruiting other kids to their favorite school. Is this something that goes on or not?
Doing it right

Good points Duane - First things First, get them here. Allow them the opportunity to judge for themselves and put all the speculation aside.

Another good point is, these kids communicate with others in there prep programs back home. Word of mouth travels fast and holds a lot of weight with these kids. Even if the end result for these visitors is not to our liking - we did our part and the Buckeye experience was told to there peers.

I do recall that. I believe my argument was not so much about not recruiting them as it was get something in the bank. I don't remember if it was you are someone else that I made the point about securing another offensive lineman then going for the big fish. Take Donnal then try to land one of these guys. Right now we have a visit from Henderson but 3 of his 5 visits have some connection to USC. Green has pretty much said it is going to take alot to keep him from pledging the Gators. Fine with us. Just come up here. I don't like the idea of only taking long shots. We are on the precipice of one OL in this class. I don't like that the odds on that are pretty good.

Do you even take off those scarlet and gray colored glasses when you sleep? That I am satisfied because of this post is such a reach. When did I say don't take a chance on these kids? I said we needed to make sure we had something in the bank. Everyone else seemed to have gotten that.

I didn't touch it. I can't say that I know how to change it. The sysops did some tweaking. Others noticed it. Seems another thing that has gone by without you noticing. It appears that you are actually the one that wants to avoid the heat as you are the only one complaining about losing the anonymity.

That is a concern but I would say a remote one. Not enough of a concern to keep me from taking a flyer on kids of this caliber.

One OL isn't realistic, is it? If it is...what? Hope Reid Fragel is the next Robert Gallery? I heard Tress still refer to him as a TE the other day. You seem to be saying we're all but through with Matt James, and that Green and Linder will stay south, but how are our chances with mid-level guys like Schofner and Michael Dennis? How about Teven Eatmon of Bucyrus Wynford as an OL?

Oh, my fault. Good one Dantonio. Just Schofner and Eatmon then.

I'm glad it's off. The Internet is already pretty anonymous... if someone is afraid to even attach a name to their comment perhaps they should rethink what they're saying.

Agree that getting them on campus has a lot of upside, but Duane, why do you think they are doing this with this game, but during the first tOSU/texas game they didn’t bring in many recruits and even told Aaron Brown not to come, which he ignored because they wanted to fully concentrate on coaching. Why do you think they are taking a different approach for this game?

I see Green as a long shot. I have not liked what I have been hearing about James for awhile. I actually like our chances better with Henderson. I would not even use the word longshot. I think we are on the outside looking in right now. Here is the thing to keep in mind and why I won't use the word longshot. We may be making more out of the USC visits than there really is. Go over and look at schedules. Which game on the Notre Dame and Ohio State schedules would you want to see? Penn State and Michigan are both away for us. Michigan is an away game for Notre Dame. Boston College is the only other home game for them that would have any appeal. So I think we have a shot. Not a good one but not a long one either. I am not saying that about Linder. I think we may have a decent shot at him.

Eatmon is off the board. He recently verballed. That said, I keep it in my back pocket. A little while ago I mentioned that the Buckeyes have a tremendous track record of getting players from Ohio who have committed elsewhere to change their mind after a verbal. They could go back on Donnal, Eatmon and/or Dennis. There is not a school in the conference outside of Michigan and Penn State who have not felt the sting of losing a verballed player to the Buckeyes.

I want to be clear about something. Ron Krumm is a level headed guy that I have been interacting with for some time. If he is confused then some others might be. It was not my intention to say that we should not recruit these elite guys. Not at all. I saw quality at need positions and we were passing on them to take a flyer on long shots. If you got that I was saying don't bother with them, that is not what I meant. The game is now about big plays and difference makers. You have to go after these kinds of players, and it starts with just getting them to come to your building to watch a game, and have them let you treat them to a good time. Most good gamblers have a "bank." They put money aside that they do not touch and play with the rest. We have not put enough in the bank. That is what I was trying to get across in that post. If Ron Krumm thought I was saying do not take a chance on them at all, then others may have read it that way too.

I am not liking what I read coming out of camp. Adams must be completely lost. Shugarts to LT and Miller to LG in place of Boren. Adams and Miller both arent that good of options. Why? Well, if they were they would have slid Cordle back to his guard spot and put Adams or Miller a RT which is a less demanding spot than LT.

This is NOT good at all. With the piss poor recruiting job this staff does with OL you simply can not afford to have a miss. Adams is starting to look a lot like Conner Smith, a stud rep coming out of HS and a complete and total bust in college. Moving Shugarts to LT IMO probably isn't a temporary move either. That tells me that the staff has no confidence in either guy (Miller and Adams) at Tackle.

What this shows to even the most basic of fans is how much danger we are in of a total disaster on the OL. If anyone goes down now, the OL becomes a complete train wreck. With a piss poor effort in OL recruiting this year, I am shocked we let so many kids in Ohio go elsewhere. It makes NO SENSE what so ever
