I am not liking what I read coming out of camp. Adams must be completely lost. Shugarts to LT and Miller to LG in place of Boren. Adams and Miller both arent that good of options. Why? Well, if they were they would have slid Cordle back to his guard spot and put Adams or Miller a RT which is a less demanding spot than LT.
This is NOT good at all. With the piss poor recruiting job this staff does with OL you simply can not afford to have a miss. Adams is starting to look a lot like Conner Smith, a stud rep coming out of HS and a complete and total bust in college. Moving Shugarts to LT IMO probably isn't a temporary move either. That tells me that the staff has no confidence in either guy (Miller and Adams) at Tackle.
What this shows to even the most basic of fans is how much danger we are in of a total disaster on the OL. If anyone goes down now, the OL becomes a complete train wreck. With a piss poor effort in OL recruiting this year, I am shocked we let so many kids in Ohio go elsewhere. It makes NO SENSE what so ever
I am not really worried about Adams. Something I have cautioned about as long as I have been doing this is don't get worked up about freshman linemen. Any freshman comes in at a disadvatange but lineman are in over their heads on a whole different level. They are young and very large. Their coordination has not caught up with their massive bodies. It takes time.
So many of these kids are not strong enough. They are running into full grown men who have been in college weightlifting programs for years. With skill players strength is important but with the linemen it really matters. How many players like Thad Gibson or Nate Williams did Adams run into in high school? Coffman is the premiere program in central Ohio. I got to see him alot. He played in a good conference, the OCC, but he still did not see the kind of players he is running into every day in practice. Offensive linemen are just behind. How many of the these kids were allowed to play Pony League with the weight limits they have? Because they are elite prospects fans get excited and put them into the lineup right away.
You notice I am lumping Adams in with the freshman. He played so little last year but more importantly he missed so many practice reps. He likely missed alot of time in the weight room. For all intents and purposes he is a freshman. He has such physical tools. He is working hard from everything I am hearing. He is just behind and overwhelmed. It is all in his head. He has NFL first round tools. He is just not ready. Give him time.
As far as the mess on the line is concerned, I am going to tread lightly on the subject. My thinking on that is well documented. Bucknuts subscribers will note that there is a lengthy discussion about Bollman going right now. I have made one post and that was a few days ago. We are so close to playing more true freshman. It would be nice to get a redshirt year for as many of them as we can. There is some positive things to point out. First, many projected Shugarts as a left tackle. He was athletic enough and agile enough to be a tight end in high school. I think it is more evidence that Cordle is handlin' bidness out there at right tackle. Miller moving inside is the worrisome bit of news. Miller is a kid never known to be the most physical but he moves down instead of Smith or Blankenship moving up the depth chart. I also wonder if Hall or Mewhort had anything to do with this decison. It makes me wonder if they are playing well enough that the staff feels like one or the other could step in and help us at right tackle if needed. You don't weaken one position to fill a need at another.
