It was an interesting weekend for me. I celebrated my 50th birthday yesterday. Saturday night was the party. My modem went bad on Friday at about 6PM. I guess that was my signal to get away from the computer and enjoy the weekend. I did. Lots of good soccer on and a number of high school games. I was particularly interested in Glenville - St. Ignatius.
First, on the teams. These are 2 of the most high profile teams in the state so fans are interested in the teams as well as the potential recruits.
I don't see either going anywhere. St. Ignatius is just not as talented as they were last year. The skill players are very ordinary and the line did not have one scholarship player. Whether they end up at big schools or not, St. Igs always seems to have a lineman or two that is going to get his college education paid for. I understand St. Igs has a lot of talent in their younger kids. Lets see how things play out. Maybe some of them push into the starting lineup as the
year goes on. Glenville is loaded. The defense is swarming. They are fast and they bring it. I can see a season where Glenville sets a school record for least point allowed but loses several games because they can't score points. With Christian Bryant, Shayne Wynn and Latwan Anderson and a massive line, Glenville scored 6 points against a far outmanned St. Ignatius defense. The only touchdown came on a blocked punt. Glenvilles first year starter at quarterback is going to have to get a lot better for the Tarblooders to make another run. Christian Bryant came in and played quarterback and it changed the game. He was hurt on a 3rd and about 30 with under 3 minutes to play. Bryant is the Glenville kicker, and a good one for high school. He place kicks and punts. The backup punter came in and shanked a punt inside the Glenville 20. I don't know why Sr didn't just take a safety. That would have given them time to work on Bryant some more and even if he could not make it back on the field the kicker could have made his kick with no pressure. Glenville dominated the game. No question who was the better team but so many mistakes, and the lack of a passing game, killed Glenville. The stats say there was a bias in the penalty calling. There wasn't. Every penalty was earned. We saw players running onto the field at the last second on about ten plays, maybe more. What pinned Glenville so deep in their own territory that set up the winning touchdown pass for St. Ignatius was 2 personal foul penalties against Glenville. You give up a third of the field in penalties on one possession, you give up field position and likely give up points.
I was very impressed with Christian Bryant. He was all over the field. He was always around the ball. good tackler and he hits. I still don't see the cornerback in him. I see a strong safety. Walker is just massive. He is supposed to push people all over the field. He doesn't. I am not ready to dismiss him completely as a potential Buckeye offer but with this performance I would not consider him an early offer kid. He would drop out of mu top 10 for 2011 until I can see him again. I was disappointed in Mark Myers, the St. Igs QB. I saw him as a sophmore and thought he was going to be the best to come out of St. Igs since Brian Hoyer. Good size and a good arm but consistently inaccurate, and all over the place with his inaccuaracy. Overthrows, underthrows, throws in the dirt. I really liked Jake Ryan fro St. Igs. He plays with great intensity and runs well. Liked him alot. A couple of players that we have not heard alot about really leaped out at me. Antwon Crutcher is a 2011 DT from Glenville. The announcers gave him 6-3 265. He is a kid to watch. He has the motor I love to see in a DT. He played really well. Another kid may have been the star of the game is Aaron Morris. He is a DB for Glenville. Don't know his class. Blocked a punt to set up the Glenville touchdown. Tipped a pass that was intercepted. Made a couple of big tackles in the open field. A kid named Pierce was impressive for Glenville. Again, I need to get more info on him.
Scott McVey went down with a shoulder injury just as he was starting to have an impact on the game. Looked like nothing but he came off the field shaking his head and did not go back in. He was on the sidelines with no pads and ice on his shoulder.Stay tuned on that.
