2011 top 20
Written by Duane Long

The class of 2010 has not been one to get excited about. Not alot of top drawer talent and with the Buckeyes having a small class there is not a lot to talk about. The class of 2011 is the complete opposite. I see 6 sure Big Four players just off sophmore film. 2 already have Buckeye offers. I think this could be aclass where the Buckeyes save a lot of money on travel. There has been some movement in the top 20. Doran Grant is looking like one of the better corners to come out of the state in the last 5 years or so. The more I see Trey DePriest the better I like him. I am not as high on Geno Sturdivant. Here is the latest top 20 for the class of 2011:

1. Braxton Miller 6-2 185 QB Huber Heights Wayne
The best quarterback prospect from Ohio in my lifetime.

2. Steve Miller 6-5 220 DE Canton McKinley
A sure national 5-star end. I have not seen an end in Ohio this good at the same point.

3. Donovan Clark 6-4 285 Ath Cincinnati Finneytown
I don’t know if he is a DT or a LT all I am sure of is he a great prospect.

4. Doran Grant 5-11 170 CB Akron SV-SM
A ball hawk with top drawer speed, great hips and great feet.

5. Kenny Hayes  6-6   224    DE Toledo Whitmer
I only hope to see another year with two potential five-star DEs in Ohio again.

6. Chris Rock   6-5  255     DL  Columbus DeSales
Likely grows into a tackle but right now he is a great looking strong side DE prospect.

7. Trey DePriest 6-2 215 LB Springfield South
Instincts to spare. Always around the ball. Moving up more than any player in the class.

8. Cole Stoudt 6-3 200 QB Dublin Coffman
Better than his brother. He would be the talk of the class if not for Miller. Will the Buckeyes go for the double?

9. Aundrey Walker 6-5 310 OL Glenville
You just don't see bodies like this very often. Raw but moves well. Could be elite.

10. Eilar Hardy 6-0 180 CB Pickerington Central
Great player. Looks like a corner but speed may push him to safety.

11. A.J. Jordan 6-1 170 WR Trotwood-Madison
Maybe the best ever out of the Trotwood program.Great hands and ball skills.

12. Josh McClain 6-2 200 WR Clayton Northmont
A big receiver who just needs to qualify his speed to jump to the top of this list.

13. Robert Walton 5-11 190 RB Glenville
Recent film impressed me. Best back in the class at this point.

14. Aundre Sturdivant 6-2 205 LB Glenville
Good middle linebacker. Good instincts. He goes as far as his body takes him.

15. Ray Hamilton 6-3 215 TE Strongsville
Doesn't have ideal size but looks good catching the ball and is a solid blocker.

16. Ronald Tanner 6-0 180 Ath Eastmoor Academy
Explosive and elusive high school quarterback that could make a great receiver or corner.

17. Chase Hounshell 6-4 225 OL Mentor Lake Catholic
Not ideal sized but plenty of room to grow, great feet and nasty.

18. Shaquil Pettaway 6-1 200 LB/S Steubenville
Could be a linebacker or a strong safety but I see a Star. Great instincts and a hitter.

19. Ed Killingsworth 6-3 190 WR/DB Warren Harding
A physical specimen that cannot be ignored.

20. Matt Cyrus 6-1 200 RB Hilliard Darby
Big back with a great body and a physical style of play.

Chris Rock

I am pretty sure Chris Rock plays for Columbus DeSales, not St. Francis DeSales in Toledo.

The full title of the Columbus DeSales is St. Francis DeSales too but your response sounds like it may be confusing to fans so I will make the change.

I went back and watched Braxton Miller's highlight reel again on ScoutingOhio. My God. His foot speed is tremendous.

Duane, how are his throwing mechanics? I'm assuming you've seen him up close. Is he a kid who has been tutored since birth to throw a football (a la Barkley, Clausen, N. Montana, etc.) or is he a more raw prospect?

I would say flawless. He comes right over the top. His motion is smooth, no hitches. He steps into the ball. That is something that I always look for with these athletic guys. Can he set his feet and throw the ball. Quick release too.

Duane, 1 prospect out of 20 from Cincinnati, and 3 from one high school in Cleveland? It seems like after the true blue-chippers, Bucknuts and you know much less about the Cincinnati HS scene and fill lists like these with players from areas where you are more familiar. Do the Cincy kids compete in fewer combines or something?

Mark my words, McClain is going to shoot up this board by the end of the season. He was in a 7 on 7 a month ago where he absolutely dominated. He is Julio Jones-esque. He had the body last year, but he didn't make plays consistently. This year, his speed has improved and he is going to explode. Number one receiver in the Midwest by the end of the year.

This is a long time debate. We have had it going back to the old days at Scout. We are not seeing as much talent come out of Cincinnati. This is the first year since I have been doing this that the Cincinnati area has had the majority of the top 10 talent in the state. Banner year for the city and the surrounding area. That is rarely the case. Great teams in Cincy. The individual talent is usually in the northeast of the state.

I would like to see Clark and Grant. I think both are elite kids. The Buckeyes seem to be showing alot of interest in Rock. I can see why. I could see an offer to him too. Maybe DePriest. We are loaded at linebacker and we are very young. I have not heard much about contact with Hayes. It may be simply a matter of numbers. We are already stacked on the weak side, and with Miller the superior player, a Buckeye offer sitting on the table, and the Buckeyes in really good shape with him, maybe there is no offer for Hayes. I would like to see more film of Walker before I say I see an early offer.

DUANE, I hope that wasn't your comment about the Stoudt Kid. First, he doesn't weigh an ounce over 165 with metal plates on his ankles. My God Son (Colton Caldwell) was playing QB, until Cole's Daddy (Cliff - from the Steelers) came in and flashed his money and influence around. Boy did he do a sales job on him.
Colton's daddy doesn't care. I would have.

Cole is not the QB his older brother was. He's too soft yet. And certainly shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence with Braxton Miller.
My boy Colton is playing H-Back/TE and may make Cole look good. Watch for him in the SHOE. He is also the backup QB. Surprised he is picked up by the services as he has 100 D-1 offers - 2010. He also has 100 Baseball offers too (Lefty). Had to stop playing Basketball and Hockey.

THANKS FOR THE LIST.

I like McClain A LOT.......however, I read that he reported in at 225 lbs at the last 7 on 7. I saw the pictures of him at the event and he looked that size as he was solid muscle. Looked more like a running back. There is no way he is gonna grow into a WR in college if he is already 6-2 225 lbs. Not to mention that his speed is only adequate at this point. Now, you put this kid on the defensive side of the ball or at RB and you may have a serious stud because he is a GREAT athlete.

Cole already has one offer as a sophmore. He is a better player as a sophmore than his brother was a senior. Who cares about his weight? He is going to be fine. Sounds like you might have a bias on this one, Bobby. Cole is the real deal.

D have you had a chance to see Jourdan Wickliffe of Cols. St. Charles? If so what do you think?

I saw him some time ago. I wanted to review before I made comment.

He is a tweener on offense. Not big enough to be a split end and does not look quick enough or fast enough to be a flanker/slot. I think it would help him to get more film of him on defense. I think he could be a fine safety.

Bobby Haines,

You are telling me there is a kid out there, from a very high profile school right here in Columbus, with 100 offers that is not on my radar, and not in any database that I know of? There are only about 110 D-1 schools. I can't remember the exact number. I think you need to advise him to go in and show these letters to coach Crabtree. He knows what an offer looks like. We see this happen every year. Kids get letters and offers mixed up. I had it happen last year with someone I know personally. I tried to tell them that they should not spend the college fund they had sat aside for him. He was not a scholarship kid. They had letters. Lots of them. I told them that was just a contact letter. I don't think they fully believed me until after signing day when he had not been offered an official visit anywhere.

If true, that could actually boost his stock. Speed was always going to be a question. If he can hold the speed he has now but move to linebacker he could be an even more heavily recruited player.

Duane, Let me clarify that. I didn't mean to say 100 offers. I meant to say contact letters and invites to camps. He has many offers to smaller schools. Especially MAC. He can't make it to all camps as he travels on Baseball too.
I understand his Coach has installed some packages for him to run the Wildcat. Coffman plays on Sunday the 30th in the SHOE. I do have a tape of him running these plays. He is 6-4 235 4.6 40 left QB looks like TEBOW physically. BIG KID. Good Hands.

FYI 119 D-1 Football Scools

kf21300,

I'm assuming you've never seen the kid play. There's way too much fascination with speed at the receiver position with fans. Put McClain at the "X" and he will ball it up. Anyone moving this kid out of the receiver position should be shot.

Julio Jones was 230 in high school and probably couldn't break a 4.5. This kid has the same potential and an Alabama offer to boot.

In response to the guy talking about Duane and Bucknuts picking kids from the usual schools instead of doing their homework.....How many kids you see coming out of Cincy Finneytown? Obviously there are gonna be some kids that get missed when there respective teams arent playing top notch football, and thats where coaches and relatives need to come in and fill the gap by making and sending out extensive film and networking with people like Duane. If you or anyone has a kid that needs to be seen, speak up about them and stop wasting time on thinking life aint fair.

Duane what do think about Butler from Hilliard Davidson?

I like him. Great feet and top drawer vision. Speed is outstanding. Receiver level speed. Good hands too. Size is going to be what keeps the big boys away. He still has time to get bigger. Runs well between the tackles for his size. Good back. His frame and how much more weight he can handle will tell how heavily he is recruited. I say MAC right now.

I'm in Cincy and I don't see the bias towards the NE Ohio players that some mention. While the 2010 class has an exceptional amount of individual talent in Cincy, that is an exception and not the standard as we have seen in the recent years. Cincinnati teams are extremely talented because of the coaching and the 'team' effort, but most kids on these great teams don't receive much attention from big-time programs like OSU...and many of the kids from Cincy that do receive the offers and sign at OSU (or UM or ND) rarely pan out. Munoz was a decent player at Tenn, Jones is a hit at MSU, Rudy is a stud at ND, Martin is 'ok' at Tenn, and Tyler Moeller (even with his injury interuption) will be good at OSU. Besides that, there's not much to talk about coming from Cincy compared to the amount of individual talent NE Ohio has sent to OSU and other programs. It's not bias that Duane and Bucknuts give the NE Ohio kids more press, they deserve it because there are more kids and more talent up there worthy of OSU attention.

On a side note, Clark will be a Buckeye. Mark it down.

First, improve your comprehension skills. I did not say that the talent is decreasing. It is rarely on the level of what we see out of northeast Ohio. That is just fact. The only people who disagree with that have a bias. I could not care less where the talent in the state is located. Second, show me the talent. What player from that part of the state have I missed?

No Wynn from Glenville?

He is a tiny kid. There is small, players who are going to have a tough time getting attention at the highest levels despite their talent, and there is too small. Right now Wynn is just too small. He has skills and time to grow but right now he is too small to be a kid who sees the lower tier Big Ten schools offer let alone the Big Four.
