Ever since the name Cardale Jones became a name that fans were familiar with, the question has been there, what if you could take only one? I came out and installed Jones as the number one player in the class. The question became louder, what if you could take only one? After Jones performance in the regional final against Massillon where he took over the game, the question has reached a crescendo, what if you could take only one?
First, I say you take both no matter what because the opportunity to improve the talent level at quarterback should always be one you take advantage of. If there is just no way to take both you have to look at Guiton and Graham next year very closely. Guiton supposedly had some moments as a passer early in fall camp. We need to see where he is. Can Graham overcome the loss of the better part of two years of reps due to injury? That is a crucial
question. I think Graham is the key and we may have a tell. I think we can read alot into Guiton moving to wide receiver. There was always that assumption about his future, well, before he showed something early in camp throwing the ball. Maybe the move would take place because he is not progressing as a quarterback but I think it will be a signal that Graham is coming along. If they keep Guiton at quarterbackI think it could be a matter of Guiton looking like he could develop into something but I think it is more likely that the staff is concerned that all those missed reps have left Graham so far behind that they wonder if he will ever become a big time college quarterback.
If you can't take both I think you have to take an honest assessment of the position. Do you have someone that can let one of those young guys sit, get stronger, get used to the speed of the game and learn the playbook, or do you need him to step in right away and play.
If you can let a kid sit and work him into the lineup at your leisure, I say go with Jones. He is a bigger stronger kid but is the more raw of the two. You can see the mistakes he makes are due to the lack of experience. That is the one thing that stood out about the Massillon game. I saw him thinking more, especially in the second half. He made better decisions than he made in previous games that I saw him in this year. He was more sure of himself. He threw 2 touchdown passes and a 2 point conversion. He would have had 3 touchdown passes but a defender came in with a great hit on the receiver in the end zone and he could not hold the ball. Jones rushed for 150 yards and another score. He is the one with the better upside.
If you need a freshman to step in and play right away then Miller is the player. He is a very polished kid already. He is running a more complicated offense, and one that is more in line with what the Buckeyes want to run.
I would make room for both. I would find a way. Quarterback is that important. Both of these kids are that good. We are usually having to run all over the country trying to find quarterbacks, keep in mind there is no Ohio born scholarship quarterback on the roster right now. Here we have them in Ohio and more importantly they are both at schools that are Ohio State pipelines. We have a great opportunity to upgrade the most important position in football like no other time in memory. The staff has to find a way to get this done.
